NETC Medical Assistant student Zakkariyya Harrison, 22, of Dillon, practices blood drawing on a simulation mannequin at the Dillon Campus.

Zakkariyya Harrison

All Zakkariyya Harrison has ever wanted was to be a nurse.

Her Halloween costumes as a kid reflected nursing.

She gravitated to the medical field during school career days.

As the 22-year-old Dillon native graduated high school she made use of her time graduating as a CNA.

“My goal is to be a nurse practitioner,” Harrison said. “I’m taking the process step-by-step, and I will get there.”

When Harrison isn’t attending Northeastern Technical College’s medical assistant program and working clincal hours at Dillon Family medicine, she is juggling work as a medical surgeon technician in ICU.

“I work clinicals 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and I have Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to get my life together. My calendar is full, but I have no regrets.”

As Harrison branches out with her studies, she is receiving a variety of work environments – the hours in a traditional doctor’s office which is family driven with more children patients are very different than intensive care unit.

Hubbard receives Betty Matheson Memorial Scholarship

Carlin Hubbard is set on becoming a registered nurse.

The Cheraw native who is set to graduate Northeastern Technical College in November as a Licensed Practical Nurse received the Betty Matheson Memorial Scholarship Fund for nursing education through the NETC Foundation.

Hubbard, 21, graduated with the class of 2020 from Cheraw High as a Certified Nursing Assistant – a career choice she wasn’t sure she wanted as a high school freshman but after her first semester in her high school health occupation class, she was going to see the program through

“It was a new program at the time, and I wasn’t sure about it until the hand-on and clinicals and I knew I could do this,” she said. “It wasn’t easy.”

The Covid years were the biggest obstacle for Hubbard with restrictions and periodic shutdowns creating barriers, but she saw the courses through even traveling to Greenville to take (and pass) her certification to meet her first goal with graduating.

Hubbard then enrolled at NETC entering the LPN program where she is on course to graduate as an LPN in November. The curriculum has its challenges, which doesn’t faze Hubbard, she rolls her sleeves up and works – this makes her a better nursing candidate, she said on a chilly November 1 afternoon prepping to take graduation photos. She passed one of her final tests earlier in the morning.

“I’m determined to finish. After a year, I plan on enrolling to be a registered nurse,” she said.

The memorial scholarship was created by friends and family in memory of Betty Matheson, who had a great appreciation for the nursing profession and supported nursing education. Matheson worked for years at Northeastern Technical College as a Psychology instructor and passed away from Alzheimer's Disease in 2015.

Individuals who would like to honor the legacy of Betty Matheson and continue to support her passion for education in the community can mail donations to the "Betty Matheson Memorial Scholarship Fund," Northeastern Technical College Foundation, 1201 Chesterfield Highway Cheraw, SC 29520.

Individuals or corporations interested in donating or creating a new scholarship can contact the NETC Office of Institutional Advancement at 843-921-6916.

NETC Foundation is a non-profit organization providing student scholarships and assists in capital, emergency and equipment expenses.

NETC Call of Duty Team wins first match

Northeastern Technical College Call of Duty squad captured its first win on the season.

NETC defeated Finger Lakes Community College, of Canandaigua, N.Y., in 4 versus 4 on Oct. 31.

After suffering disappointing losses in the first two matches, NETC came to play and took home their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory.

“Team strategy and game planning has improved, and it was great to see everyone play with a purpose and execute,” said NETC Head Coach Tyler Nolan.

“The team looks to build on this win and make it two in a row next week.

NETC’s record is 1-2.

Warzone Duo suffers loss with late comeback

NETC’s Warzone Team of Victor Barrington and David Hancock fell to Northwest College of Powell, Wyoming, in Week 3 of play Oct. 27.

In game 1, the duo got off to a rough start and fell behind early unable to put it together and lost 8-1, said NETC Esports Head Coach Tyler Nolan.

“In game 2, Vic and David were more competitive as the game came down to the wire,” Nolan said. “The duo made quite a few unnecessary mistakes and that really cost them.”

Down 6 eliminations later with Victor the last alive, he connected on 3 quick snipes, cutting the lead to 3.

“Unfortunately, while rotating in, he was caught in the open,” Nolan said.

NETC suffered an 11-8 loss.

After 3 weeks, Barrington and Hancock have a 1-2 record.

“They'll need to clean up the mistakes and play more together to stay competitive,” Nolan said.
