WHAT WE WANT IN OUR NEXT RECTOR

Profile and Job Description

Please Note: Patti McCartney, Chair of your Search Committee, has asked that I not disseminate the following Wiki Leaks to the parish just yet. I believe, however, that you have a right to know the direction the committee is going, and so I share this with you. Be sure to voice any additional suggestions you might have. Bear in mind that this is only a preliminary draft. I feel sure more requirements and details will be forthcoming. Sorry, Patti.

The next rector of Trinity should be an alumnus/alumna of UofA, AU, FSU, UofF (fill in your alma mater), who lettered in a varsity sport, attended Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, is between the ages of 32 and 40, with four years of active military service and 20 years of ordained ministry; with a handsome/lovely spouse/partner whom they met while on a mission trip in Haiti; with 2.3 adorable, well-behaved small children, (The .3 child being adopted from Wilmer Hall, the Episcopal Home in Mobile) a rescue dog and a three-legged cat; has taken a vow of poverty, but lives a lifestyle similar to parish members; visits hospitals and nursing homes twice a week, and all parishioners in their homes at least once a year; has earned masters degrees in education, administration, finance and psychology (seminary degree optional but preferred); is inoffensively serious and pious, but with a great sense of humor; preaches 11-12 minute sermons every Sunday that entertain, challenge (but not too much), teach, and uplift; is available to every parishioner 24/7; is an outstanding teacher and does so in at least two classes year-round; models and encourages a life of Christian discipleship and sacrificial giving without making anyone uncomfortable or guilty about their own; never asks for or accepts a raise; promises to stay for at least 20 years; is a wordsmith and expert in social media; has a good singing voice; dresses well but modestly; participates in all parish events and activities; ensures that the parish always lives within its budget; is an accomplished liturgist but allows favorite local pagan customs to continue; takes personal responsibility for an annual 10% growth in membership and pledges; hunts and/or fishes but has a profound respect for the environment and all living creatures; leads at least one mission trip each year; plays a musical instrument, preferably the guitar; will take a drink without ever overindulging; is an excellent retreat leader; knows everyone in the parish by name and their extended families in the first three months; is capable and willing to do minor repairs in the rector; will establish a vibrant youth program out of thin air; has been Spiritual Director for several Cursillo weekends; possesses boundless energy but is a calming, non-anxious presence; and, finally, can walk on water, but, when necessary, swims well.

If neither Jesus nor Mary is available or interested, (Can you imagine?) we will consider one of their close relatives if he/she is a cradle Episcopalian with good references and their own health insurance.

I hope this gives you a laugh or two, and that you will also discern a few germs of truth and insight along with the foolishness. My point is that unrealistic expectations always lead to disappointments. There is no ideal rector, but plenty of good priests just waiting for your call.

Please thank and keep in your prayers Patti and the Search Committee: John Crusoe; Charlie Galloway; Susan Galloway; Tara Lanier Carter; Brooks Jones; Ralph Wagoner. God bless you in your time of Spirit-led transition.

AROUND THE CHURCH

Great News for Trinity!

It is my great pleasure to tell you that the Rev. Martha Harris has accepted the unanimous invitation of Trinity’s vestry to serve the parish as its “regular supply priest.” We anticipate that my last Sunday as your Interim Rector will be November 6, All Saints’ Sunday. Martha’s first Sunday as supply priest will be the following Sunday, November 13. While there may be the occasional Sunday when Martha is not available, it is the plan, intention, and hope that this arrangement will provide continuity of worship services until your new rector is called.

Trinity Rector Search Committee Report

The The Episcopal Church Office for Transition Ministry (OTM) guides parishes through times of discernment and the calling of a new rector. With assistance from Ashley Freeman, our new Canon to the Ordinary, the search committee will gather needed information for the OTM Profile that will be on the Episcopal Church national database. The information used to produce our portfolio will be recorded by the scribes in each of the forum groups that will soon be meeting. If you have not signed up for a group, please contact Patti McCartney. The purpose of the OTM Portfolio is to provide clergy seeking a new call, and bishops as they assist clergy who are seeking calls. By using the portfolio, potential candidates can envision what kind of church Trinity is and seeks to be. Within the next few days, please check your email for a message from our facilitators, who will tell you about your forum group. Those without email will be contacted by phone.

The search committee has the challenge of finding a new rector to recommend to the Vestry for calling . By participating in the forum groups, all have the opportunity to give their input. The committee is thankful for your help and continuing prayers.

Vestry Works to Improve Coordination & Communication of Programs & Ministries

Your vestry has agreed that a high priority for us is to work on improving the coordination and communication of our programs and ministries. Soon each member of the vestry will be taking responsibility for one or more aspects of our mission. When that is finalized, we will let you know who is the contact person for each. Ralph Wagoner is the vestry person for Communications.

Bay View: A first step toward refining coordination is to clarify the process to submit items to the Bay View. Kay Carson, our editor, in conversation with Ralph and me, has suggested that all articles be sent by email to the parish office, [email protected]either to Jean, our administrator, or directly to the rector. This will allow Jean, who maintains the parish calendar of events, to provide coordination and consistency. This will also help the rector be aware of all aspects of the parish program. Once reviewed by them, Jean will send them in an orderly manner to Kay as editor. This will assist her as she publishes all items internally to the parish, as well as to appropriate outside outlets.

Weekly Announcements: We are returning to printed announcements in the service bulletin, as was the practice at Trinity pre-Covid. If you have a news item to be shared with the parish, please send it by email to Jean at the parish office – [email protected]. She will need to receive it by noon on the Wednesday before the Sunday you wish it to appear.

Blessed Pups

of Apalachicola

More than two dozen Apalachicola dogs, accompanied by their humans, participated in Trinity's annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, including Marlene Seaborn with Scout, Barry Lawson with Callie (sporting turquoise beads), along with dogs escorted by Judy Rice, Dave McLain, and Sue McClure. Bonnie Stewart organized this popular community event and the Rev. Rusty Goldsmith offered the blessings.

OUR GREATER COMMUNITY

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A recent forum in Apalachicola brought breast cancer prevention and treatment information to the community. Survivors, including Patti McCartney, were recognized at the event, sponsored by Franklin Needs, Inc. a local organization that raises funds for use by Franklin County women in their fight against breast cancer.

Saturday, October 22, 2022          11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
