Spiral Design for Logo of Trinity Episcopal Church. Apalachicola, Florida
Homily by Kristin Anderson, Sunday, July 3, 2022
Good morning,

Perhaps you may have wondered about the origin and meaning of the three-lobed image that is the official logo of Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola, Florida. Some people see fish, some see dolphins. Some see other things. This is perfectly OK.

The inspiration for this design came to me from the ancient three spiral designs carved into rocks in Northern Ireland that go back at least 2,000 years. Variations of the three-spiral design can be found in many times and cultures all over the world. This design and its many variations certainly mean a lot to a lot of people over a lot of time. Wouldn't it be interesting to be able to talk with them....

I was raised in a loving but secular family. My first awareness of the Divine came to me unbidden in geometry class in middle school in the 1950s. The ways circles, triangles, squares, pentagrams, hexagrams, and more complicated geometrical figures relate to each other is still fascinating for me.

Geometrical figures simply are. We do not create them. We discover them. This is what led me to believe that there has to be a Creator.

Susan Galloway's granddaughter, June, spent a month of her summer vacation in Apalachicola. While visiting her grandmother, she shared her lovely voice with us as a guest member of the choir. A regular visitor to Trinity, June has often opened Sunday services as a bell-ringer.
