The Commentary

Dear Ones,

Grace to you and Peace in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! 

As Advent continues toward Bethlehem, I hope you are finding time to do as the season asks of us: to anticipate, get ready, to prepare yourself for the birth of Jesus once again.

The light coming into the world is sorely needed at this tumultuous time. With the grievous attacks happening upon peoples and countries in the Middle East, with many minority groups afraid of what's to come, with children being targeted for being different, we all need to find ways that we are not just going to celebrate the light but also BE the light. How will you work for justice and inclusion of all persons? How will you speak out against atrocities happening at home and abroad? How will you sit alongside those in fear or grief so they know they're not alone? We all can work in ways small and large to make life better for everyone.

There is much in the world that seeks to divide us. We cannot buy into the lie that we're better off on our own. Find ways to connect. Find ways to build your community. Find ways to get curious and to open yourself to those you don't know or understand. And, as author and poet, Alok, says: "We do not need to comprehend someone before we have compassion for them." So let us lead with compassion, lead with love. Let that be what prepares our hearts and minds for the coming of the light in the world - making us able to participate in spreading that light to all who have need of it.

¡Gracia a Uds. y Paz en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo! 

A medida que el Adviento avanza hacia Belén, espero que encuentres tiempo para hacer lo que nos pide la estación: anticiparte, prepararte para el nacimiento de Jesús una vez más.

La luz que viene al mundo es muy necesaria en estos tiempos tumultuosos. Con los graves ataques que están sufriendo pueblos y países de Oriente Medio, con muchos grupos minoritarios temerosos de lo que está por venir, con niños que son el blanco por ser diferentes, todos tenemos que encontrar la manera de no sólo celebrar la luz, sino también SER la luz. ¿Cómo vas a trabajar por la justicia y la inclusión de todas las personas? ¿Cómo vas a denunciar las atrocidades que se cometen en tu país y en el extranjero? ¿Cómo te sentarás al lado de los que tienen miedo o sufren para que sepan que no están solos? Todos podemos trabajar, a pequeña o gran escala, para mejorar la vida de todos.

Hay muchas cosas en el mundo que intentan dividirnos. No podemos tragarnos la mentira de que estamos mejor solos. Busca formas de conectar. Encuentra formas de construir tu comunidad. Encuentra formas de sentir curiosidad y de abrirte a quienes no conoces o no comprendes. Y, como dice el autor y poeta Alok: «No necesitamos comprender a alguien antes de sentir compasión por él». Así que lideremos con compasión, lideremos con amor. Que eso sea lo que prepare nuestros corazones y nuestras mentes para la llegada de la luz al mundo, haciéndonos capaces de participar en la difusión de esa luz a todos los que la necesiten.

We pray for peace,

for goodwill among nations; and for the well-being of all people. Pray for justice and peace.

We ask your prayers for the poor,

the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, and those in prison. Pray for those in any need or trouble.

We commend to your mercy all who have died,

that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all

your saints in your eternal kingdom.

We pray for:

Sabrina, Gloria, Mary, Chris, Surya and Machrina.

We give thanks for those celebrating birthdays this week: 

David Briggs, Joel Gaspar and
