Dear Ones,

What a boon it is to feel prayers heading one’s way. I feel them from all of you this week so fully, and I can’t express my gratitude enough. My mother is showing signs of improvement after some touch and go moments following her procedure to get six (!) stents put into her heart on Monday. Modern medicine is utterly astonishing and we are grateful for the excellent care she’s receiving. 

Many of you know I am from Minnesota; and many of my nearest and dearest friends still live up here. Since most of my good friends are folks I know from church things through the years (church camp, Teens Encounter Christ, etc), you might not be surprised to know that several of us who were church nerds in our 20s all grew up to be priests! Two of them work nearby and have provided such generous pastoral care to my mom and to my whole family. It is rare for me to be on the receiving end of pastoral care in this way, but to watch the people I’ve grown up with live into their vocations, and serve us so gently and kindly swells my heart with humility and gratitude. It means I can step out of the shoes of my working self and into the shoes of my original state: that of being my mother’s daughter. What a gift to feel loved and safe in these tender times. 

I can’t thank our Cathedral staff team and Chapter and Bishop enough for jumping in to cover for me this week, and I look forward to her continued improvement so I can be with you this Sunday. My mother’s name is Barbara if you would be so kind as to continue praying for her as she recovers.

Qué bendición es sentir que las oraciones se dirigen hacia uno. Esta semana las he recibido de todos vosotros y no tengo palabras para expresar mi gratitud. Mi madre está mostrando signos de mejoría tras algunos momentos de incertidumbre después de que el lunes le pusieran seis (¡!) stents en el corazón. La medicina moderna es absolutamente asombrosa y estamos agradecidos por la excelente atención que está recibiendo. 

Muchos de ustedes saben que soy de Minnesota, y muchos de mis amigos más cercanos y queridos todavía viven aquí. Como la mayoría de mis buenos amigos son gente que conozco de cosas de la iglesia a lo largo de los años (campamento de la iglesia, Encuentro de Adolescentes con Cristo, etc.), ¡no os sorprenderá saber que varios de los que éramos frikis de la iglesia a los 20 años nos hicimos sacerdotes! Dos de ellos trabajan cerca de aquí y han prestado una atención pastoral muy generosa a mi madre y a toda mi familia. Es raro para mí recibir este tipo de atención pastoral, pero ver a las personas con las que he crecido vivir su vocación y servirnos con tanta delicadeza y amabilidad me llena el corazón de humildad y gratitud. Significa que puedo salir de los zapatos de mi yo trabajador y ponerme los zapatos de mi estado original: el de ser la hija de mi madre. Qué regalo sentirse querida y segura en estos tiempos tan tiernos. 

No puedo agradecer lo suficiente a nuestro equipo de personal de la Catedral y al Cabildo y al Obispo por cubrirme esta semana, y espero que siga mejorando para poder estar con ustedes este domingo. Mi madre se llama Bárbara, si son tan amables de seguir rezando por ella mientras se recupera.

The RE-Humanization Project launches March 9

In my sermon on January 26, I spoke about our possible response to the dehumanization of many people and groups occurring in our world right now. I called it The RE-Humanization project. We will launch that conversation about what this might be for us on March 9 at 11:15am in the South Room (formerly called The Godly Play Room). All are welcome.

New Way to Help Garfield

Supplies distributed March 17

We’re revamping our support for Garfield Elementary School to better help the teachers. We are starting by focusing on purchasing from the teachers’ Amazon wish list. If you order from the list, your purchase will be delivered to the school and distributed on their workday, March 17th. If you wish to shop for these items elsewhere and bring them to the Cathedral, that will work also.

Trinity Seniors March Event

Hear from an AARP representative about the latest with Social Security and Medicare along with a presentation of how to remain vigilant against fraud and scams targeting seniors. Anyone 60 or older is welcome to join us for this timely presentation and potluck. Starting on Wednesday, March 12, we will offer a 5-week Lenten opportunity to pray together in the tradition of Taizé followed by soup suppers. Taizé worship is centered in simple songs and chants that take us deeper into our prayers by way of repetition, silence, and breath. We will pray from 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. in the quiet and peace of our Cathedral and then move to Atwood Hall for a simple dinner. Sign up to bring a soup and/or a bread at the desk in Olney or at this link.

A partir del miércoles, 12 de marzo, ofreceremos una oportunidad de Cuaresma de 5 semanas para orar juntos en la tradición de Taizé seguido de cenas de sopa. El culto de Taizé se centra en canciones y cantos sencillos que nos llevan a profundizar en nuestras oraciones por medio de la repetición, el silencio y la respiración.
