The Election of a New Presiding Bishop this Summer |
This coming June, the Episcopal Church will elect our 28th Presiding Bishop. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry was elected in 2015, and he finishes the normal nine-year term in October. The election will take place on June 26th, 2024 at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and the new Presiding Bishop will take office on November 1st.
In 2021, the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of a Presiding Bishop began work to identify the nominees. In May of 2022, a Church-wide survey was completed, and over 6,000 responses were collected to determine "the skills, qualities, and gifts most desired in the next presiding bishop, considering what the church and the world may look like in the next decade." The data from the survey was used to create a "Profile for the Election of the 28th Presiding Bishop."
In May of 2023, the two-month nomination period was opened, and 111 bishops were nominated by Episcopalians from across the world (bishops cannot nominate themselves). Those bishops who accepted the nomination submitted the required biographical information and references, and they were interviewed by the Nominating Committee. And finally, in March of this year, the final list of nominees was determined at a retreat in North Carolina.
Last week on April 2nd, the official slate of nominees for the 28th Presiding Bishop was published:
- The Right Reverend Scott Barker
- The Right Reverend Daniel Gutierrez
- The Right Reverend Sean Rowe
- The Right Reverend Robert Wright
| |
Videos and biographical information for each nominee can be viewed HERE.
The slate of four men came as a surprise to many, as the Episcopal News Service points out: "The committee’s slate is marked by geographical and racial diversity, though it includes no women or LGBTQ+ nominees. The nominee bishops also draw on a range of experiences in seeking to become presiding bishop for the office’s next nine-year term."
The election process in June will proceed as follows: "The four names will be formally submitted to the General Convention during a joint session on June 25, a day before the House of Bishops is scheduled to elect the 28th presiding bishop.
Following the Convention Eucharist at 8:30 a.m. on June 26 in the Kentucky International Convention Center, the bishops with seat, voice, and vote will travel to Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Louisville, where the election will take place during a sequestered session in the context of prayer and reflection. The House of Deputies will then be asked to confirm the election." Read more from the Episcopal News Service about the election process of the new Presiding Bishop HERE.
All eyes will be on Louisville this June, and we will pray for our bishops as they carry out this very important work of election of the next Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

"Pews to Chairs" Project
There is still time to donate a chair!
For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Trinity's new cathedral chairs which arrived the week before Christmas.)
The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!
To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.
Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.
Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
