The Feast of the Transfiguration
This coming Sunday, August 6th, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. Our Book of Common Prayer lists the Transfiguration as one of the holy days of the church year as a “Feast of Our Lord.” 2023 is a special occasion because the fixed date of August 6th actually falls on a Sunday. This won’t happen again until 2028.
Mount Tabor, the historic site of the Transfiguration, is just eleven miles west of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, and the mountain stands alone in the vast Jezreel Valley (see picture below). August 6th was the date of the dedication of the first church built on Mount Tabor in the 4th century A.D., and since then, Christians have venerated the site where the eyewitness events of the Transfiguration were documented in the New Testament.
The Transfiguration is a presented to us as an eyewitness account, recorded in all three of the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), and also in the Second Epistle of Peter. With Saint Peter traditionally known as the author of the Epistle who saw Jesus transfigured on the mountaintop with his own eyes, we have received this apostolic eyewitness account. The Second Letter of Peter (1:16-18) records that “we were eyewitnesses of his majesty” and “we were with him on the holy mountain.” Peter, James, and John were present with Jesus when suddenly, “he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light” (Matthew 17:1-8).
What is the significance of this unique miracle of Jesus? Join us this Sunday to find out more!

Church of the Transfiguration, Mount Tabor
O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Many blessings,
Father Jason

- Backpack (no wheels)
- 1 pencil pouch

- 1 pencil sharpener
- 1 pack of 4 large erasers
