The First Sunday in Lent and the Great Litany

This Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist, we will pray the Great Litany together at Trinity Cathedral. On the First Sunday in Lent, many Episcopal and Anglican churches and cathedrals across the world will take part in this centuries-old tradition of chanting the Great Litany in procession.

The history of the Great Litany is fascinating. It was first published in 1544 by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, author of The Book of Common Prayer, and it is the oldest existing example of a liturgical rite in the English language.

From An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church: "The Great Litany’s use in church processions was ordered by King Henry VIII when England was at war with Scotland and France. It was printed as an appendix to the Eucharist in the 1549 Book of Common Prayer. The Great Litany includes an invocation of the Trinity, a series of deprecations which seek deliverance from evil, spiritual harm, and natural calamities, and a series of obsecrations which plead the power of Christ’s Incarnation, life, death, and resurrection for deliverance." The full text of the Great Litany can be found on page 148 of the Book of Common Prayer.

So please join us this Sunday at 10:00 as we step back in time almost 500 years. And as we begin this Holy Lent, may the ancient words of the Great Litany help us to center and focus our prayers, not only for ourselves, but for those who need us most in this world.

Many blessings,

Father Jason

Beautiful Artwork Donated to Trinity Cathedral

Last week, the Cathedral received a generous donation of artwork from the family of the Reverend Dr. Mary Ellen Cassini. Mother Mary Ellen grew up at Trinity Cathedral, she was ordained a deacon and priest here, and her parents are buried in the Cathedral columbarium. We are honored to provide a safe home for this beautiful and historic painting which now hangs in the All Saints' Chapel.

The exact provenance of the painting is uncertain, but some evidence points to a church that was demolished in Guadalajara, Mexico, possibly from the 16th or 17th century. The subject of the painting is the Cumaean Sibyl (Latin: Sibylla Cumana), an oracle or prophetess of the ancient world who foretold the birth of Christ.

Stop by the All Saints' Chapel soon to see the painting! If you look closely, you can see the vision of the Holy Family and the manger scene in the bottom right corner. Thank you, Mother Mary Ellen and Cassini family!

Lenten Mini-Retreat

Click here to REGISTER and for more information.

Lent is a season of reflection and contemplation. Taking part in a retreat allows us to consider how we are living our lives and if they are a reflection of what is important to us. Time away from our phones, responsibilities and those things that can keep us distracted gives us the chance to recalibrate.

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is a beautiful historic church where the peace and quiet of the interior space will help you breathe deeply and listen to the sound of your own heartbeat. Here you will find your way back home to what is of value. You will gain insight into the ways you can make room in your daily life for prayer and meditation.

Ann Rose and the Rev. Dr. Mary Ellen Cassini will join us as we together explore new ways to enter into the season of Lent. You can REGISTER on the homepage of the Trinity Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under “Upcoming Events.”

Food Pantry Ministry

These are difficult times and many struggle to make ends meet. When you come on Sundays, please consider bringing one or more items of canned or boxed food.  Items to consider include canned goods, peanut butter, packaged cereals, paper products, bottled water, dish and laundry soaps, boxed dinners, toiletry items, and feminine hygiene products. Remember that we cannot accept expired food or items that need refrigeration.

Gift Card Ministry

The LGBTQ+ ministry has organized an on-going Gift Card collection drive to aid in the purchase of perishable food items for food pantry recipients. These cards are distributed on a weekly basis to families and individuals in need. To continue to help this cause or if you or someone you know could benefit from this ministry, please contact Roberto Soto at:

"Pews to Chairs" Project

There is still time to donate a chair!

For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Trinity's new cathedral chairs which arrived the week before Christmas.)

The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!

To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.

Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.

Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.
