William White, First Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church | This coming week on Wednesday, July 17th on the calendar of the Episcopal Church, we remember the life and ministry of William White, Bishop of Pennsylvania and first Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, elected in 1789. White played a fundamental role in the establishment of the Episcopal Church's constitution, and his presence was also crucial in his role as Chaplain to the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1789 and also as Chaplain to the U.S. Senate. (*Fun fact: from the years 1789 - 1807, the first eight chaplains to the U.S. Senate were Episcopal priests, and in total, 19 Episcopalians have served in the role!)
William White was the second American to be ordained a bishop, consecrated at Lambeth Palace in London in 1787. This was after the ordination of the first American bishop, Samuel Seabury, consecrated in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1784. (For those of you who are fans of Hamilton, you will know that Samuel Seabury makes several appearances in the musical!)
White also served as Rector of St. Peter's and later Christ Church in Philadelphia for 57 years, where many of the founding fathers and 15 signers of the Declaration of Independence worshiped, Important parishioners of Christ Church, Philadelphia include George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Betsy Ross.
| |
The first American Book of Common Prayer was compiled, approved, and printed largely as a result of the work of William White. White was reelected as the fourth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in 1795 and served in that role for over 40 years until his death in 1836. He was a priest and bishop who worked tirelessly to help build and shape not only the Episcopal Church, but the United States itself. He died on July 17, 1836 at the age of 88 in Philadelphia.
So as we prepare to welcome the 28th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church later this year (the Right Reverend Sean Rowe), we give thanks for the ministry and the legacy of William White.
O Lord, who in a time of turmoil and confusion raised up your servant William White to lead your church into ways of stability and peace; Hear our prayer, and give us wise and faithful leaders, that, through their ministry, your people may be blessed and your will be done; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Pews to Chairs" Project
There is still time to donate a chair!
For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Trinity's new cathedral chairs which arrived the week before Christmas.)
The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!
To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.
Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.
Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.

The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
|
What does it mean to you to be called a child of God?
| |
Sometimes, it’s easy to inure ourselves to death. In a society that, by and large, has dispensed with communal mourning traditions, we tend to grieve privately and, as a result, quickly. Combine this with long diseases and correspondingly long treatments, and we might be tempted to move on as quickly as possible, lest we be thought of as wallowing. And after all, we all must know by now that death awaits us, right? Maybe it’s best that we get comfortable with it.
