Japan and the Worldwide Anglican Communion
This month I had the privilege of visiting several different cities and regions across Japan. This was a “bucket list” trip that I’ve been planning with good friends for over a year, and I am truly grateful for a time of rest and refreshment and for an unforgettable experience in a new culture for me. We traveled from Tokyo by train to Kyoto, Nagiso, Kanazawa, Narai, and Hakone, and then back to Tokyo again. We visited Buddhist temples (so many temples!), spectacular gardens, museums, and castles along the way, and we witnessed some of the most impressive natural landscapes I have ever seen. We hiked for a day on the famous Nakasendo Shogun trail, and we visited an active volcano high atop Mount Hakone.
One of the personal highlights of the trip was our visit to the Anglican Episcopal Dioceses of Tokyo and Kyoto. I had the opportunity to visit St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Tokyo and the adjacent parish of St. Alban’s, home to a vibrant English-speaking congregation and the diocesan offices of Bishop Francis Xavier Hiroyuki Takahashi. Read more about the Diocese of Tokyo HERE. In Kyoto we visited the diocesan offices of Bishop Stephen Takashi Kochi and the Cathedral Church of St. Agnes. Read more about St. Agnes and the Diocese of Kyoto HERE.
The very first missionaries and founders of the Anglican Episcopal Church in Japan (known as the NSKK, the Nippon Sei Ko Kai in Japanese) arrived in the country in 1846. Currently there are eleven dioceses within the NSKK, with over 300 hundred churches and worshipping communities. As members of the worldwide Anglican Communion, Episcopalians in Japan worship using The Book of Common Prayer, the Ki Tō Sho, translated into Japanese in 1959.

These visits were wonderful reminders of the rich diversity and the lasting heritage of our Anglican/Episcopal tradition around the world. They were reminders of our shared worship, our common prayer, and our mutual understanding of God and of creation that crosses cultures, languages, and continents. It is a unique gift to be an Episcopalian and an Anglican, and for that we can say thanks be to God!
Many blessings,
Father Jason

- 1 pack of 4 large erasers
- 4 folders with pockets for homework
- 4 glue sticks
- 1 box of Crayons (24 ct.)
- 1 box of markers
- 1 ruler
- 1 safety edge scissors
- 2 bottles of hand sanitizer

- 1 ream of white copy paper
