Juneteenth Celebrations

in The Episcopal Church

This weekend we join with congregations across our diocese and the Episcopal Church as we commemorate Juneteenth. Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday in the United States in 2021, and the Episcopal Church celebrates the day with special activities in churches and dioceses around the nation. Here in the Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida, all are invited to attend a diocesan-wide celebration at Holy Family Episcopal Church in Miami Gardens this Saturday, June 17th beginning at 12:00 noon (see flyer below).

Juneteenth is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was declared in 1983. Also known as “Freedom Day” or “Juneteenth Independence Day,” Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce freedom for all slaves which had been declared in the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln almost two years earlier in 1863.

The Reverend Canon Willis Foster, Sr. and Ms. Edna Johnston write this about Juneteenth: “Honoring Juneteenth reminds us that we must preserve and learn from the stories of those who lived through slavery and its aftermath here in North America. This remembrance’s purpose is for all God’s children living today, and, in the future, to know the stories of those who came before them.” (Read the full article on The Episcopal Church website here: https://www.episcopalchurch.org/racialreconciliation/juneteenth-and-the-call-to-remember/).

Here at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, we are truly blessed to live, serve, and worship in a community that values and honors the rich diversity of humanity. Join us this holiday weekend as we celebrate that diversity, and as we continue to strive for justice, freedom, and equality for every child of God, without exception.

A Prayer for Juneteenth (from A Collection of Episcopal Prayers for Reconciliation and Justice):

O God of liberty and justice: we live in a nation in which the institution of human bondage was once a legal and accepted practice. We give thanks for those who worked and fought, at great personal sacrifice, to bring about an end to that cruel and oppressive system in our own land, and we pray that governments and authorities everywhere in the world might be led to make a quick end to the enslavement of any human being, throughout the Earth; through Jesus Christ your son, who came to set us free. Amen.

Many blessings,

Father Jason
