"Do not be afraid."

from Father Rafael Garcia

If there is something that continues to surprise us about Jesus when we listen to his message, it is his great sincerity. He does not want his disciples to think that the ministry is a popularity contest, where only applause, fame and riches await them; on the contrary, the task at times will become extremely difficult.

This Sunday's Gospel reminds us that we should not be afraid of anything or anyone because God is at our side, He is our support in the most difficult moments.

Have you ever counted how many times the Word of God reminds us not to be afraid?

In the Bible there are 365 references to not being afraid, from the beginning. Adam, when God calls him, hides out of fear. Three times this happens in the Gospel we are going to proclaim this Sunday. Our God is with us at all times.

In good times he tells us "do not be afraid", in bad times "do not be afraid", when there is sickness, scarcity, abundance, financial problems "do not be afraid".

"Do not be afraid!" could be one of the great Gospel teachings of Jesus.

Jesus tells his disciples three times in this Sunday's gospel not to be afraid. And he sends these fearful, uneducated men out to continue his work. And to all of us Jesus says, three times "Do not be afraid."

We are not to be afraid, even when life is difficult and hard.

The challenge for us is that when life is painful and difficult, most of us are naturally afraid. It is not that we do not have faith in Jesus. Rather, we can simply feel overwhelmed by the challenges and difficulties in our life. And it can seem like there is no way out! But God always enlightens us to the next step.

Jesus Christ repeats to us three times, "Do not be afraid!" because nothing bad can happen to us if we put our trust in God.  Jesus assures his own of God's continual presence, solicitude and love, throughout his walk in the world.

This week I invite you to bring any concerns you have to Jesus. Simply place your worries or pain in his hands.

"Do not be afraid, for I will be with you until the end of time." Matthew 28:19

Blessings,

Father Rafael
