Walk the Way of the Cross

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, and we begin our Holy Week journey, walking the Way of the Cross together. We are transported to Jerusalem through scripture, music, preaching, prayers, and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist; the story of the Passion of our Lord comes to life. We can only fully experience this journey by physically participating in the liturgies on each of the 8 days of Holy Week, and I encourage you all to do just that if you are able. Come and walk the Way of the Cross each and every day of Holy Week.

Our Bishop reflects on the profound experience of Holy Week: "The Liturgies of Holy Week are full of drama, movement, symbolic action, and remembrance. They all fit together into an entire liturgical experience, and they offer profound riches to those who give themselves to the full cycle of Palm Sunday, the evening services on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and the great liturgies of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Eve, and Easter Day. It may seem like a lot of church for one week, but these services bring us to the heart of our Christian faith, and we shall never begin to understand that faith unless we are willing to walk with Jesus now. Over a lifetime, these services mold the Christian sensibility and forge the Christian soul."

Holy Week Preacher: The Reverend Canon Tony Lewis, PhD

This year we are privileged to have The Reverend Canon Lloyd (Tony) A. Lewis, PhD, Professor Emeritus of the Virginia Theological Seminary as our Holy Week preacher. Dr. Lewis served on the faculty of Virginia Theological Seminary as the Molly Laird Downs Professor of New Testament from 1978 until his retirement in 2012. He completed his Ph.D. at Yale University, focusing on the social and theological implications of the use of family language in Saint Paul’s Letter to Philemon.

Before joining the faculty at VTS, Professor Lewis was ordained a deacon and priest in The Episcopal Church, and he served as Curate at Saint George's Church, Brooklyn and Assistant Priest at Saint Monica's Church, Hartford. He has served as Dean of the George Mercer, Jr. Memorial School of Theology and Bishop's Deputy for Education in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, Honorary Assistant at the Church of Saint James of Jerusalem, Long Beach, New York, and Adjunct Professor of New Testament at the General Theological Seminary, New York City.

Professor Lewis has also served as Canon Theologian to the bishops of Long Island and as Honorary Assistant to the Rectors of Rectors of Saint Paul's Parish, Washington, DC, Christ Church, Hackensack, New Jersey and Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Mary's City, Maryland.

Trinity Cathedral is honored to welcome Father Tony Lewis - you won't want to miss even one of his sermons this week!

Many blessings during this Holy Week,

Father Jason

It is the tradition each week at Trinity Cathedral for individuals and families to make a donation for the altar flowers and the sanctuary candle in honor of or in memory of a family member, friend, or a specific cathedral ministry or organization. Names for the donations are listed in the Friday e-Newsletter and in the Sunday service bulletin.

Please email the Cathedral office at office@trinitymiami.org or call (305) 456-8851 to make your donations to this important ministry.

Food Pantry Ministry

These are difficult times and many struggle to make ends meet. When you come on Sundays, please consider bringing one or more items of canned or boxed food.  Items to consider include canned goods, peanut butter, packaged cereals, paper products, bottled water, dish and laundry soaps, boxed dinners, toiletry items, and feminine hygiene products. Remember that we cannot accept expired food or items that need refrigeration.

Gift Card Ministry

The LGBTQ+ ministry has organized an on-going Gift Card collection drive to aid in the purchase of perishable food items for food pantry recipients. These cards are distributed on a weekly basis to families and individuals in need. To continue to help this cause or if you or someone you know could benefit from this ministry, please contact Roberto Soto at:

"Pews to Chairs" Project

There is still time to donate a chair!

For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Trinity's new cathedral chairs which arrived the week before Christmas.)

The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!

To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.

Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.

Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.
