Update: Pews to Chairs Project | As of this week, the removal of the pews in the Cathedral is complete (see below some pictures of the process in reverse chronological order). The cleaning and restoration of the floor will continue over the coming weeks, but we can already see the result: a beautiful space that seems even bigger and more magnificent than it did before! | |
For the next three Sundays you will see the process continue to unfold. We will be using temporary folding chairs (a necessary evil, unfortunately) until our permanent Cathedral chairs arrive from the manufacturer the week of December 5th. The new chairs will be in place, God willing, for Sunday, December 10th. Please be patient with the temporary chairs as we await the arrival of the new Cathedral chairs - thank you!
The floor restoration is a labor intensive, multi-step process that consists of 1) a chemical cleaning of the tiles, 2) filling each bolt hole (over 700 total) with epoxy where the pews had been attached to the floor, 3) repair of all damaged grout and broken tiles, and 4) application of a sealant to protect the newly restored floor for decades to come. The full floor restoration also includes the All Saints Chapel, the Narthex and Vestibule, the North Transept Chapel, and the Sacristy. The original, vibrant green color of the slate tiles is now visible after cleaning, and it is beautiful!

We are very grateful that the wood from the pews is being repurposed. Thanks to parishioner Toby Muir, we connected with a local company called "Miles of Wood" (www.milesofwood.com). They reclaim and salvage old wood and repurpose it to create new furniture and cabinetry in new homes and businesses. They have taken the wood from our pews at Trinity Cathedral and given it new purpose, and for that we say thanks be to God!
We now have a glimpse of what our newly transformed and flexible Cathedral space will look like, and now “the sky’s the limit” for potential events and activities like these: after-school and educational programs, free medical clinics, clothing drives, expanded food distribution programs, art and photography exhibitions, civic and interfaith events, concerts, musical and theatrical performances, and many others. We are fully committed to opening the Cathedral to local community partners in ways we have never done before. The physical transformation of our Cathedral space will now allow us to accomplish our ministry goals of mission and outreach in new ways, while we await the completion of our new Cathedral Hall over the next few years.
If you haven't already done so, please consider donating one or more chairs to help us complete this important project. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Read more about how to donate chairs HERE, and also see the "Pews to Chairs" information below in this newsletter.
We give thanks to God for the resources to make this transformation of our Cathedral space a success. Onward and upward!
Many blessings,
Father Jason
The Very Reverend Jason Roberson
Cathedral Provost

"Pews to Chairs" Project
For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Chester Cathedral, UK.)
The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!
To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.
Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.
Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.
