Report from Diocesan Convention | Father Jason at Convention (left to right) with the Very Reverend Donna Mote, Dean of the Keys Deanery and Rector of St. Paul's, Key West, the Very Reverend Tim Fleck, Dean of the South Dade Deanery and Rector of St. Thomas, Coral Gables, and the Very Reverend Tony Holder, Dean of the North Palm Beach Deanery and Rector of All Saints, Jensen Beach |
This past Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28, our diocese held its 54th Annual Diocesan Convention at St. Andrew's in Boca Raton. It was an inspiring weekend of sharing, learning, and worshiping together as the Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida. Here are some reflections from our two Cathedral delegates, Jackie Clarke and Ed Hibshman:
"How wonderful for brethren to join together in unity. The Convention was a lovely light, gaining knowledge and giving hope for the future in Christ. The involvement of the clergy and laity in ministry as a team was emphasized. Faith development in the community, one of the workshops, gave tools for identifying different stages for worshipers in their Christian journey. Interaction was encouraged, and Bishop Wright (Atlanta, GA), the guest preacher and teacher, was instrumental in creating situations for sharing, for example, singing and greeting new people. The Eucharist was indeed a service of hope and thanksgiving. Blessed to have been there." (Jackie Clarke, Cathedral Chapter Member)

"It was a privilege to represent the Trinity Cathedral congregation last week at Diocesan Convention and to vote on various diocesan matters – 2024 diocesan officers, 2024 diocesan budget, and various resolutions. It was great to meet and interact with other congregation representatives and clergy. There were a number of presentations and workshop sessions that educated and informed about various diocesan ministries and initiatives – such as feeding the homeless, “Laundry Love,” and the College for Congregation Development.
One of the highlights for me was the sermon by the Right Reverend Robert Wright, the Bishop of Atlanta. His message of love and all of us being first, citizens of the kingdom of God was inspirational. A video of the service is available on the diocesan website HERE. I have not attended many services where many loud AMENs were shouted out during the sermon. His message produced that level of energy and enthusiasm. If you have an opportunity to attend a Diocesan Convention in the future, I highly recommend it." (Ed Hibshman, Senior Warden)
Two important resolutions were passed this year at Convention: 1) one that asserts Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and 2) a second that condemns discriminatory laws recently passed by the legislature of the State of Florida.
The entire Convention packet, including these resolutions, can be found HERE.
Many blessings,
Father Jason

"Pews to Chairs" Project
For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Chester Cathedral, UK.)
The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of / in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!
To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.
Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.
Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.
