Evensong & Music in the Cathedral |
Evensong is one of the most unique forms of worship in our Anglican tradition of the Episcopal Church. It may be one of the most beautiful expressions of choral music and prayer in all of Christendom (I admit, I may be a little biased!). This ancient form of sung prayer is a magnificent reflection of our Anglican roots and our heritage as Episcopalians. Evensong was included by Thomas Cranmer in the very first version of the Book of Common Prayer in 1549, which later became Evening Prayer in the 1552 version.
The order of service for Evensong includes prayer, scripture lessons, psalms sung in the distinctive style of Anglican chant, hymns, and two sung canticles, the Magnificat (Song of Mary) and the Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon). Evensong is sung either daily, weekly, or monthly in Episcopal and Anglican cathedrals and large churches all over the world. Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London are examples of Evensong at its very finest.
We have the great honor of singing Evensong here at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral from September through May each year. It is sung under the direction of Mr. Christopher Harrell (Director of Music & Liturgy at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Coral Gables) by the Anglican Chorale of Southeast Florida and by members of our own Cathedral Choir at 5:30 pm on one Sunday each month. see the full music calendar for 2023-24 below, including the All Saints' Requiem and Christmas Lessons & Carols.

These choral worship services provide an opportunity to pause from the chaos of our daily lives in the beauty of our Cathedral and to worship in a way that is unique in all the world. If you have never experienced Evensong, please consider attending on Sunday, September 17 at 5:30 – you won’t regret it!
Many blessings,
Father Jason

"Pews to Chairs" Project
For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Chester Cathedral, UK.)
The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of / in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!
To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.
Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.
Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.

We continue to pray for our Presiding Bishop, the Most Reverend Michael Curry, who was hospitalized again recently. He is scheduled for surgery on September 20. An update on his health can be found here.
O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers: Mercifully accept our prayers, and grant to your servant Michael the help of your power, that his sickness may be turned into health, and our sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
