A Dire Situation in Cuba
The people of Cuba are currently living in a nightmare situation that has drastically deteriorated over the past two weeks. You may have read about this heartbreaking situation in the news, especially after hurricane Oscar made landfall there last week. A majority of the island is currently experiencing blackouts for 20 hours or more each day, the water supply has been cut off, there has been no trash collection for months, there is no gasoline, and many Cubans are almost completely without food or any way to cook it.
I have been in regular contact this week with our friend, the Dean of the Episcopal Cathedral of La Santísima Trinidad in Havana, the Very Reverend Gilberto Caballeros Elizalde. Dean Gilberto wrote this: "The situation is terrible here. It's been over a week now without electricity or water across the entire country. The power grid has collapsed along with the other tragedies this brings, no water and no food. We have been forced to eat the little bit of frozen food we had in the freezer. There is no gasoline to purchase because the gas stations are closed. The entire country is paralyzed. We are only able to charge our cell phones in the car for just a little while so that we can communicate. The trash heaps fill the streets from one corner to the next. All of Cuba is experiencing this. The despair is palpable. I don't know how we can continue like this. We need God's powerful intervention. Only a divine miracle can help us in this absolute chaos."
| |
Dean Gilberto is pictured to the right with Father Jason, the Reverend Dr. Donna Mote, rector of St. Paul's Key West, and her wife Becky England. They visited the Cathedral in Havana in April of this year to deliver food, medicine, and other supplies. The Dean and his wife, Mari, also visited us here at Trinity in July.
|
How can we help? Dean Gilberto has asked all of us at Trinity Cathedral to begin praying for him and his family, for the parishioners and the community of the Cathedral of La Santísima Trinidad, and for all the people of Cuba. Secondly, we are currently exploring new and creative ways to send food and supplies - this is a very difficult thing to do considering the total collapse of the infrastructure across the country. As soon as we have a safe and reliable way to deliver things to them, we will begin doing so as we are able. Please stay tuned for more updates on ways to help in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, please pray for Cuba.
Merciful God, in these troubled times, look with compassion upon your children in Cuba. Bless them with your guiding Spirit, that they may act with justice and mercy; nourish their souls with patience and strength, that they may endure hardship and care for one another; comfort them with a sense of your goodness, that they may find your peace in the midst of chaos and fear; through Jesus Christ our comforter. Amen.

The funeral service for Molisa Sjogreen will be held at the Cathedral tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 26th, at 11:00 a.m.
With deep sadness, and yet with steadfast faith in God, we announce the death of Cathedral parishioner Molisa Sjogreen on September 29th. Molisa joined Trinity in 1983, the Cathedral was her home, and she encouraged all six of her grandchildren to become acolytes. Please keep Molisa, her family, and her friends in your prayers. May she rest in peace, and let light perpetual shine upon her.

Honoring Bill Hopper this Sunday
This Sunday, October 27th we will honor and thank Bill Hopper for his service at Trinity Cathedral. For the past several years, Dr. Hopper has served in both a volunteer and paid capacity as our Organist and Choir Director. Bill has been a faithful parishioner of the Cathedral since 1980, and he was the part-time organist from 1990-2005. Bill's dedication and love for Trinity Cathedral have helped sustain our music program for decades, and we are extremely grateful.
On Sunday we will present Bill with a check to honor his service to the Cathedral. If you would like to donate to this gift for Bill, please do so. Checks can be made payable to Trinity Cathedral with "Bill Hopper" in the memo line, and donations can be made online here by selecting "Other" in the dropdown menu and writing "Bill Hopper" in the Comment box. Thank you for helping us make this financial gift for Bill possible!

Remembering the Very Reverend Robert Willis
With deep sadness, yet with steadfast faith in God, we mourn the sudden death of Dean Robert Willis, Dean Emeritus of Canterbury Cathedral. Dean Robert and his partner Fletcher visited us here at Trinity in March of this year. Their morning prayer videos on YouTube sustained countless people across the world throughout the pandemic, and Dean Robert leaves a lasting legacy at Canterbury. We are grateful for his life and ministry, and his death is a great loss for the Church.
Please keep Dean Robert, Fletcher, his family, and all who loved him in your prayers.
Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him.

"Pews to Chairs" Project
There is still time to donate a chair!
For many decades now, pews have been replaced by chairs in countless cathedrals and churches across the Episcopal Church and the world with remarkable success. In many cases, it has allowed congregations to experience a transformation and rebirth of their communities. Stackable, multi-use chairs will give Trinity a fully flexible and multi-purpose space that functions not only for worship, but for a variety of ministry and community events. (See the above picture of Trinity's new cathedral chairs which arrived the week before Christmas.)
The success of Transforming Trinity and the Pews to Chairs project depends on the donation of chairs by cathedral parishioners, congregations, and individuals across The Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida and the wider Church. Chairs may be donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one or in honor of a specific church, congregation, or organization. Please consider donating one or more chairs!
To donate: Please download the chair donation form HERE, complete it, and make your check payable to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please make sure to write “Pews to Chairs” in the memo line. Mail checks and forms to: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16th Street, Miami, FL 33132.
Online donations can also be made on the Cathedral website (www.trinitymiami.org) under the “Giving” tab – please be sure to choose the “Pews to Chairs Campaign” on the dropdown menu to designate your donation.
Please reach out to Father Jason by email at frjason@trinitymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find more details about the Pews to Chairs project HERE.

The Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost
|
When situations seem hopeless, do you think that it is more difficult or easier to ask God for help?
| |
In today’s Old Testament passage from Jeremiah, the prophet offers a message of hope and redemption to the Israelites, who have had their lives torn apart by war, terror, and trauma. The book of Jeremiah addresses the Babylonian exile of the Israelites. As hopeless as this situation must have seemed, God will keep promises made to God’s people. God will restore the exiles to the promised land. God is still the same God who saved the Hebrew people from their slavery in Egypt.
