April 10, 2019

The mission of Trinity Church is to share Christ's love and grace in a vibrant community whose joyful spirit empowers people to do God's work.

THE WAY OF LOVE
GO: Cross boundaries, listen deeply and live like Jesus
Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” – John 20:21
Send them into the world in witness to your love. – Book of Common Prayer, 306

As Jesus went to the highways and byways, he sends us beyond our circles and comfort, to witness to the love, justice, and truth of God with our lips and with our lives. We go to listen with humility and to join God in healing a hurting world. We go to become Beloved Community, a people reconciled in love with God and one another.

For Reflection and Discernment
• To what new places or communities is the Spirit sending you to witness to the love, justice, and truth of
God?
• How will you build into your life a commitment to cross boundaries, listen carefully, and take part in healing and reconciling what is broken in this world?
• With whom will you share in the commitment to go forth as a reconciler and healer?

RECTOR'S THOUGHTS
Sunday begins the central week in the Church year. On Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion, we begin with the joyful waving of palms and move into the somber story of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. We have opportunities to receive communion every day of Holy Week – Monday at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., and Wednesday at noon. On Maundy Thursday we remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends, how he washed their feet and commanded them to celebrate this special meal whenever they would gather in his name. Beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, we prepare the church for Good Friday and the All-Night Watch. The somber Good Friday Liturgy (at Noon and 7:30 p.m.) puts us in mind of Jesus’ death and how our own sinfulness contributes. The Great Vigil of Easter (8 p.m. on Saturday, Easter Eve) may be the most powerful, most moving, most joyful service of the Church Year. And then we have Easter Day with the three services, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Flowering of the Cross – the gathering of the Church as we celebrate the great good news that Christ is Risen.
It’s always gratifying to be able to worship with the many people who come to church on Palm Sunday and Easter Day. Those two days have a great deal of meaning for people all over the world. But … I have to admit to being frustrated by the relatively low attendance at the other services in Holy Week. I know the many reasons why people don’t come – their families are too busy, it isn’t something that they’ve ever done before, they’re tired after a long day and a long commute, and many more – but I also know that people will discover new depths to their faith through their participation in Holy Week. It helps us to live into the story of how Jesus was rejected, how he was willing to die on a cross for our sake, and how he rose again to bring us the promise of eternal life with God. I hope you’ll be able to come to some of our Holy Week services this year. It will be my last Holy Week at Trinity and I’d really like to spend it with you.
