One of our Lenten Series this year will be a repeat offering of “These Are our Bodies,” a very strong program that helps parents, grandparents, and others learn how to teach their children about human sexuality in a faithful, modern, and appropriate way. Claire Curcio, who participated in the first session, had this to say about “These Are Our Bodies:” “This Lenten offering is excellent for parents and also for us grandparents, both to back up and to understand what is being said in the family and also to be prepared when those difficult questions come up when you have ‘Nanny Duty.’”

Virginia politics has certainly gotten interesting in the past couple of weeks, hasn’t it? The issues that surround our Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General all point out areas where we as a society need to grow. The issues of race and sexual relations are at the center of our lives both as individuals and as a community. Both are issues that we would rather ignore than talk about. When it comes to how we ought to respond to politicians who wore black face 30 years ago, I found a Washington Post column by the Rev. William Barber, as African American pastor from North Carolina, to be particularly helpful. Here’s
a link so that you can read it too. Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Susan Goff wrote a letter to the Diocese about this issue; you can find it
here. As for the issue of sexual misconduct, my experience in that area from serving on the Diocesan Committee for the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct for many years taught me that it’s critical to hear the full story, from both the accuser and the accused. I pray that all parties will have a chance to be heard in the allegations that are now coming to light.
Issues of race and sexual relations are fraught with difficulties and potential misunderstandings. Let us pray that our political leaders and we will have the grace, the wisdom, and the courage to deal with them appropriately and caringly in the coming weeks.
