Dear Parishioners:
Msgr. Donald Sakano – 50th Anniverary of Ordination – Congratulations!
Congratulations to Msgr. Donald Sakano (left) on his 50th Anniversary as a Priest this weekend. We are pleased that he is celebrating the 12 Noon Sunday Mass at the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts to mark the joyous occasion. This is fitting as he began his ministry as a priest in 1971 at the Church of the Sacred Hearts. The people of the Archdiocese of New York have been blessed by his multifaceted ministry these fifty years. Of particular “close to home” note is his decades long, and continuing involvement in the work of Club 33, adjacent to the Chapel. In addition to his pastoral work at various parishes, his leadership in the social ministry of the Church – particularly in developing affordable housing in the Highbridge section of the Bronx – is legendary and unprecedented. I am delighted that after his “retirement” as Pastor of the Basilica of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral his ministry is still alive and vibrant in our parish of Our Saviour/Sacred Hearts.
Baptisms – The Feast of Corpus Christi
Next Sunday, June 6th, we welcome into our Church children from three families at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at the Church. Congratulations! Let’s keep them in our prayers. Celebrating baptisms at Mass on the Feast of Corpus Christi is a helpful reminder that reception of the Eucharist is the culmination of the process of initiation that begins at Baptism. As we re-open, we hopefully will be welcoming more and more of our parishioners to in-person worship each Sunday. Please reach out to your family, neighbors and friends and extend an invitation for them to join us.
Feast of the Sacred Hearts – June 13th
The following Sunday, June 13, we will mark one of the patronal feasts of the parish, the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, at all the Masses at the Church and Chapel. We do so to celebrate the legacy and future of our parish community of faith. From the earliest days of the Church after Pentecost, it was in the individual local communities of faith that Jesus continued to be present as the disciples shared his words and wisdom and followed his command to celebrate the memorial meal of the Eucharist and receive his body and blood. It continues in our parish on Park Avenue and East 33rd St., now in the twenty-first century: we hear his word from the scriptures, and we share his body and blood in Communion.
Outreach to our neighborhood homeless
I am grateful to those who have already responded to our invitation to learn about the outreach ministry to the homeless in our neighborhood in conjunction with the Sant’Egidio Community. About ten of our parishioners have already participated or expressed interest. There is another opportunity this Tuesday evening June 1st. Fr. Enzo will meet any interested parishioners at 6:00 p.m. in front of the Church of Our Saviour. Please send an email to the office,
letting us know you are interested. Much more to come on the opportunities to participate in this ministry in upcoming weeks.
