E-Arkive The Electronic Newsletter for Ark and Dove

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday, with much to celebrate!
Join us for confirmation at 9:30 am and the children's musical Plane Ol' Mission Trip at the 11:00 am service. Finally, don't forget your pledge cards for this Sunday's dedication! All are welcome!

Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

This Sunday we will receive the fourteenth confirmation class of Ark and Dove into membership at 9:30, we will enjoy the children's musical Plane Ol' Mission Trip at 11:00, and we will dedicate our pledges to Transformations, our Capital Funds Saving Account at both services.

On the liturgical calendar this Sunday is known at Trinity Sunday, and so we will be singing Holy Holy Holy  (hymn number 1 in Glory to God) at both services.  The words to this hymn were written in the early 1800's by an Episcopal priest by the name of Reginald Heber.  Rev. Heber found his inspiration in two Biblical texts, Revelation 4:2-11, which was based on Isaiah's vision of heaven found in Isaiah 6:1-8.  You might want to read these texts on Saturday just to help you understand and appreciate one of Christianity's favorite hymns.

In keeping with our Trinitarian theme I am sharing two old, maybe ancient, Scottish prayers below.  These are part of  a  collection gathered by Alexander Carmichael in the 1800's.  He went into the countryside speaking with regular Christians and writing down the family prayers that people had passed down, by memory, for generations.  Many Celtic poems and prayers follow Trinitarian paths.

Peace of Christ,
Pastor Tim

 And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory."
- Isaiah 6:3

Morning Prayer

My walk this day with God,
My walk this day with Christ,
My walk this day with Spirit,
The Threefold all-kindly:
Ho! ho! ho! the Threefold all-kindly.

My shielding this day form ill,
My shielding this night form harm,
Ho! ho! both my soul and my body,
Be by Father, by Son, by Holy Spirit:
By Father, by Son, by Holy Spirit.

Be the Father shielding me,
Be the Son shielding me,
Be the Spirit shielding me,
As Three and as One:
Ho! ho! ho! as Three and as One.

Evening Prayer

In name of Father,
In name of Son,
In name of Spirit,
Three in One:

Father cherish me,
Son cherish me,
Spirit cherish me,
Three all--kindly.

God make me holy,
Christ make me holy,
Spirit make me holy,
Three all-holy.

Three aid my hope,
Three aid my love,
Three aid mine eye,
And my knee from stumbling,
My knee from stumbling.
- Carmina Gadelica: Hymns and Incantations by Alexander Carmichael

Transformations: The Capital Savings Fund Campaign

TRANSFORMATIONS! FINISHING THE DREAM We've asked you to dream with us, to pray with us, to search for ways that you might be able to help accomplish this Transformation. Dedication Sunday, for your pledges is this Sunday, June 11th, but even if you have not figured out if or how you can participate, it is never too late. With that in mind, we wanted to share with you some of the ways our team has considered being able to save for this goal.
*  For those who are still working: the amount you receive as a pay raise or bonus each year.
*  For those who generally receive tax refunds: the average amount of your annual tax refund.
*  For those who are not yet tithing: an additional 1% to 2% of your annual income.
*  For those who recently paid off a loan or a debt: the amount of the payment you had been making.
*  For those who have saved up a retirement nest egg that is now supporting them comfortably: a percentage that will allow us to support others.
*  For those who have received an inheritance: a portion to honor your loved one and allow their legacy to continue.
There are many ways we can spend our money, but to do it in a way that transforms lives and honors God is truly a gift. Thank you for praying with us, and for supporting this dream of Transformation.

This Sunday is the day that the kids have been working so hard on!
Please be there at the 11:00 service to see this awesome, hilarious, and inspiring kids musical, "Plane Ol' Mission Trip" and see how they learn to make a difference, even while being stuck in an airport.

We are coming closer to June 25, and the band is working hard to put together our songs for unity!
As another teaser for the upcoming service, here is an offering from the always great Matt Mather!  (Also, fun fact for our youth, this is a sneak preview of one of this year's GenOn conference songs!) Happy Friday!

All the People Said Amen by Matt Maher

God Bless,

Many opportunities await you!

Summer Book Club

SUMMER BOOK CLUB Do you love to read? Have you ever finished a great book and wanted to talk about it with others? This summer, we will host a book club just for you! In June, July, and August, we will read a different book and come together for fellowship and discussion. June's book is The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. From Amazon.com: "Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, the #1 New York Times bestseller from Colson Whitehead, [the novel is] a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South."
Pick up the book and join us at church on Tuesday night, June 27 at 7 pm. Contact Pastor Jon ( jgnelson1985@gmail.com).

Christian Education

FIELD DAY! June 11th is the last Sunday for regular Sunday School and Godly Play.  We will hold our annual Field Day for PreK through 5th graders on June 18th, so make sure your children where their play clothes to church when they come that Sunday.  We will start our Summer Sunday School sessions on June 25th.  This is a combined class of preschool through the fifth grade which will run through August 27th.
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL AND VBS TEACHERS Adult volunteers are needed as teachers for Summer Sunday School.  Please pray and consider signing up as a teacher for one Sunday or several Sundays.  Kim Champagne (kim.champagne@gmail.com) will provide all the materials, including a lesson plan, a video and a craft; hopefully we will attract middle and high school youth as our assistants. Speaking of...

SERVICE LEARNING CREDITS Attention all Middle School and High School Students! Are you interested in earning service learning credit over the summer? Do you like being helpful in a place where you are really needed?  The Christian Education Ministry needs your help in the nursery, Summer Sunday School and Vacation Bible School this summer.  Please contact Kim Champagne ( kim.champagne@gmail.com) to find out how you can help out and earn credit for helping!
RENEW! The Green VBS is coming to Ark and Dove July 9 through July 13, in the evenings.  Please see Pastor Jon (jgnelson1985@gmail.com) or Christina Nelson (christinajoy87@gmail.com) if you are interested in helping out this summer.  Registration is now open! Deacons Corner

The Deacons want to celebrate all those who have achieved educational milestones this year. If you or someone close to you recently graduated from high school, undergrad or grad school, please let us know admin@arkanddove.org. Graduates will be included in the prayer list and formally acknowledged in an upcoming church bulletin.

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. - Deuteronomy 31:8
DEACONS FUND One of the annual special offerings at Ark & Dove is the Deacons Fund offering, which we accept any time during the year. If you receive offering envelopes there is a pink one in the box for this offering. The Deacons Fund enables us to help our church households through situations that arise during the year and require more than we have available in the annual ministry and mission budget. Hosting a large memorial service is one example, but often the circumstances require privacy and therefore are not known to most of the congregation. The Board of Deacons is grateful for your contributions. (Greg Makar, glmakar@juno.com, Moderator of Deacons)
Fundraising for Eagle Scout Project

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT FUNDRAISING DATES As part of my Eagle Scout Project, I am working on part of the spiritual meander on the church grounds. The section I am working on will include a reflection circle containing a gazing ball at the end of an approximately 40' path. I will be collecting donations on June 18, June 25, and August 27. Money and resources are welcome. For details please contact me at dillon.i.benson@gmail.com. I will also be available to answer questions in person on any of those dates. Have a blessed day, Dillon Benson, dillon.i.benson@gmail.com

OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS the Ark and Dove community has connected with the Solanos, a refugee family from Mexico. Laura Willoughby, with the help of Rev. Migde Lucas from Communidad Presbyteriana la Trinidad (CPT) in Annapolis, has formed a group dedicated to working with this family on a variety of needs. One of the largest needs was safe, stable, affordable housing for this family of (soon to be) six. I am happy to report that such a home has been found in Eastport and the Solanos are now moved in, and a housewarming party was held on June 3 to celebrate this wonderful event.

So many people contributed to making their new townhouse a home, especially Rebecca Bell Echols, who used her redecorating talents to find and refinish furnishings and to stage their home (and it was a surprise to the Solanos!). Other members helped to move and set up furniture and other household items, including plenty of toys for the girls! This was truly an impressive act of service and love that made an enormous difference to a family who is learning to make a new life in a different country. Our next event will be a baby shower for Griselda on July 9* after the 11:00 service. Contact Laura Willoughby at ljwilloughby@gmail.com for more information. Thank you, Christine Caufield-Noll, Mission Elder, ccnmission@outlook.com *Please note the date has been changed from June 18 to July 9.

Featured item for May is MACARONI AND CHEESE (Annie's organic, Amy's, Back to Nature, Pirate's Booty, etc.) Please drop off food items in the Mission Zone bin. Thank you for your donations!

JOIN THE FRONT-DOOR GREETER TEAM The Greeter Team is seeking new greeters for both Sunday worship services. Greeting is easy but important. Everyone arriving for worship - from the first-time visitor to the charter member - deserves a warm, friendly greeting, and the front-door greeter is normally the first person to provide it. Visitors may also arrive with questions about where to go or where to take their children, so we count on the greeter to provide the Christian hospitality and service we value. Greeting is also a great opportunity to meet other members and visitors and learn names. We start greeting about 15 minutes before worship begins. If you want to sign up or just learn more, please contact Greg Makar (301-483-8255, GLMakar@juno.com ).
