BIBLE STUDY - SEE YOU LATER IN JULY!
GIVING THANKS FOR THE LIFE
OF ONE WHOSE VISION AND FAITH BROUGHT US ALL TOGETHER
Philip "Rev" Desenis
November 30, 1928 - June 24, 2022

Of Northbrook, IL, born to Neil and Florence Desenis in Chicago, IL on November 30, 1928, passed away on June 24, 2022, at the age of 93. Loving husband of Joanne Marie Grauer Desenis; father of Lynn (Rick) Swanson, Deb (Jim) Sackrison, Judy (Scott Peterson) Desenis; grandfather of Jennifer Geiger, Lauren (David) Tyda, Caitlin Sackrison, Annie Peterson, and Meg Peterson; great grandfather of Makena Geiger; brother of Judy Landa; and uncle to 10 nieces and nephews. Phil graduated from Elmhurst College (1950) and Eden Theological Seminary (1953). He began his ministry at St.Pauls United Church of Christ (UCC) in Chicago (1953-1959), where he met his wife, and then continued his career at Trinity UCC in Deerfield, IL (1959-1990). He faithfully served his congregations and communities and held many positions, including chaplain for the Deerfield Fire and Police departments, hospice chaplain for Highland Park Hospital, member of Rotary, and trustee and director of the UCC Pension Board. “Rev”, as he was fondly known by all, loved fishing, camping, gardening, golfing, football, pets, nature, rain, fireworks – but, most of all, he loved people. A private burial will be held, while a public memorial service is planned for September 10 at 2:00 at Trinity UCC. In his honor, memorials can be made to Trinity UCC Capital Fund, 760 North Avenue, Deerfield, IL, 60015. For more information, see the Kelley & Spalding website (https://www.kelleyspaldingfuneralhome.com/)

UPDATE ON BELL TOWER, COURTYARD AND
MEMORIAL GARDEN PROJECTS

Construction has begun on the Capital Projects including the courtyard, the Memorial Gardern and the Bell Tower!
The new cement sidewalk was poured in the Memorial Garden. We have repaired and replaced the old stepping stones that were there before. The replacement walk was designed to avoid the cremains in the Garden. It looks stark right now, but access is definitely improved, especially for the handicapped. We are confident it will look better as we proceed with landscaping work.Text Link
The sidewalk work in the courtyard has also begun. The damaged portions of the circular walk have been removed. The replacement cement has been poured; the staining of the cross portion of the walk has yet to be completed.

The Bell Tower portion of the work is expected to begin June 29. The first step is to build the substantial scaffolding, and then the tuckpointing can begin. We expect repair and reconstruction of the retaining wall to begin after the Bell Tower is completed.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the work so far. Also, thanks to all who have asked questions and provided feedback as we have proceeded. I really do value your opinions.

Big News!
The Village Board unanimously approved the Climate Action report and recommendation of the GHG Working Group, and specifically supported the following three objectives:

  1. Convert 100% of electricity to renewable sources by 2030
  2. Reduce transportation emissions by 55% by 2030
  3. Reduce waste emissions by 66% by 2030

This report will help guide the Village over both the short and long term towards the goal.

We thank Trustee Oppenheim for her outstanding leadership, and our Mayor and Trustees for their commitment to the goal, and the village staff for their tireless efforts.

This is a milestone event for our collective efforts as Go Green Deerfield. Read the Climate Action Report here.

Echoing Art’s words, “Onward we go!”
