Pastor's Corner

As we prepare to enter the season of Lent I believe it appropriate to share with you some history and practices of Lent. Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian  liturgical calendar  that begins on  Ash Wednesday  and ends approximately six weeks later on  Holy Saturday , the day before  Easter Sunday . The purpose of Lent is to prepare Christians for Easter through  prayer , doing  penance repentance  of sins, and almsgiving . This season is recognized and observed by Protestants and Catholics world-wide.
During Lent many Christians commit to fasting, as well as giving up certain luxuries in order to replicate the account of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ's journey into the desert for 40 days; this is known as one's Lenten sacrifice. Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional or volunteering in their community, to draw themselves near to God.
This Lent I urge you to consider doing something you do not normally do throughout the rest of the year, like attending Pastor Joey's Lenten Bible Study on Monday evenings beginning March 1st, or devoting yourself to practice one of the spiritual disciplines more frequently like prayer, fasting, or reading an inspirational book or Lenten devotional. Lent is a perfect time to take an inventory to best see where you are spiritually. To that end I will be sharing a Spiritual Inventory with you on the first Sunday of Lent  to help evaluate your spiritual wellness, and ask that you consider taking the assessment to help facilitate your spiritual growth.

Clyde Scott
Senior Pastor
Ash Wednesday Services

Begin Lent on Wednesday, February 26 with the traditional imposition of ashes in some traditional, and untraditional, ways:

ASHES TO GO from 7:00-9:00am in the Trinity UMC parking lot.

Stop in on your way to work or after dropping the kids off at school or child care for ashes, prayer, coffee and donuts.

Traditional service is at 7:00pm in the Sanctuary.
Lenten Bible Study

In the five-week study The Grace of Les Misérables, author and pastor Matt Rawle dives into six ideals found in the story-grace, justice, poverty, revolution, love, and hope-each represented by a character in Hugo's story. As these imperfect and relatable characters interact, we can see how these ideals work together (perhaps even in spite of each other) out in the world.

Led by Pastor Joey Gambrell

Scouting for Food

Blythewood Scouts collect 7,000 food items for Christian Assistance Bridge

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and volunteers from the Blythewood area combined forces last Saturday to collect approximately 7,000 food items to feed the hungry.

Scouting for Food is part of an annual scout service project held nationwide. In Blythewood, the food drive benefits Christian Assistance Bridge, which provides food and other emergency assistance to those in need.

Cub Scout Pack 224 and Boy Scout Troop 224 from Trinity United Methodist Church, Cub Scout Pack 633 and Boy Scout Troop 633 from New Kirk Presbyterian Church, and Boy Scout Troop 252 from Masjid Noor-Ul-Huda Islamic Mosque participated in the effort. Girl Scout Troop 690 and Christian Assistance Bridge volunteers also braved the chilly day to help sort food.

Saturday's work was actually part two of the project. A week earlier, scouts blanketed local neighborhoods with door-hangers to promote the drive. Last weekend they returned to collect donations door-to-door and deliver them to Trinity UMC's parking lot for sorting.

Similar drives take place this time of year across scouting's Indian Waters Council, which covers the Midlands, according to John Sagona, Capital Rivers District Commissioner. Hundreds of other scouting councils across the country hold their drives between November and March each year.

News from Missions

The Missions Team is looking for a few volunteers to travel to Guatemala in late October or early November of 2020.  This group will be an information gathering team to begin planning for a larger mission trip to Trinity's missionary partner, Rev. Luke Ryhee at Healing Guatemala, in 2021.  Pastor Joey Gambrell has already stepped forward to volunteer to be a member of this team.  If you have ever wanted to be a part of an international mission trip, this is your chance.

Not interested in traveling to Guatemala, y ou can still help Rev. Luke in his ministry.  For as little as $35 dollars per month, you can help a young Guatemalan girl or boy pursue an education and help lift their family out of poverty.  What a great way for your family, Sunday School, Ministry Team, UMW Circle or other group to share the love of Christ and lift a family out of poverty.

Look for more information about how you can be a part of Healing Guatemala on the Missions Bulletin board in the Narthex.

The Missions Team is always in need of volunteers to help with individual projects.  Look for information on how you can serve for one or more of our projects during the year.

If  you have a passion for Missions and want to help Trinity expand its missions program in your community and the world, we have a plan for that.  You can volunteer to job shadow the current Missions chair, for the next year, with the aim of becoming Missions chair in 2021.   Being the Missions chair is truly a labor of love.  We have a strong team who will have your back and Christ who will help you

Please spend time in pray about each of these opportunities and listen for God's call on your heart about each of these opportunites.  For more information, contact the current Missions chair, Judy Bailey at [email protected].

The children of Trinity will once again release butterflies on Easter Sunday morning during Sunday School.

Each kit includes a colorful pop-up habitat, a cup containing 3 to 5 butterfly larvae, special food, a feeding kit, and instructions. If you already have a habitat, you can reuse it and order the larvae separately.

To order your butterflies fill out a bulletin insert or contact the church office.   All orders must be received by March 8 to ensure timely delivery. You will be notified when your kit arrives to the church. For more information, please contact Kim Burns.
