Prayerful Thoughts from Rusty Stephens
Heavenly Father,
For the prayer within, we pray in the name of your son our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately in life we sometimes have losses such as loss of income or a job or a service we depend on, the list goes on. The work to overcome these can be difficult; however our feelings toward these losses does not generally cause an overwhelming and crushing feeling inside. One that does though, is the loss of someone that you so very dearly love more than virtually anything else in the world. It could be a parent, spouse, child, grandparent, brother or sister, close aunt or uncle, cousin, friend or anyone else that you treasure so deeply in your life. Even the loss of a pet, especially for a lonely person, can cause this devastating feeling.
For some this loss seems easier to overcome than for others. Possibly they appear pretty normal on the outside, but on the inside they may have a deep hurt that won’t easily go away. Others are in such an overwhelming grief that they just can’t function as usual and may even breakdown and cry without warning to anyone, even themselves. This for many is the worst thing in life that they will ever go through. What is the way out of this? Who can we turn to in this situation?
There is one who is ready and waiting for us to seek him out. There is one who knows fully what we are going through. There is one who had to watch his son be mocked, spit on, brutally beaten, whipped, have spikes driven through his hands and feet, then hoisted up on a cross, having to endure a slow, torturous, painful death. This one is our Heavenly Father, seeing his only son Jesus Christ, go through all of this for everyone on earth, to create a way of forgiveness for the sins they committed, including the ones that tortured Jesus then and also including all of us. Yes, God, you showed your amazing unconditional love for us by the sacrifice of your son Jesus, the only person on earth without sin, the only one who could save us eternally. Then you, Jesus, rose from the grave on the third day and eventually ascended into Heaven, showing that all of your forgiven followers at the end of their lives will be blessed as you lead them to Heaven.
Some may have a false notion that you, Jesus, don’t really care or know what it’s like to lose a dear loved one. The shortest verse in the Bible tells us so much about your compassion, Jesus. In the book of John, chapter 11, Lazarus who had died, was one that Jesus loved along with his loved ones. When Jesus saw the loved one’s weeping, his heart went out to them. In verse 35, “Jesus wept.” You, Jesus, could see the hurt in the loved ones of Lazarus as they cried in sadness for their loss. So along with the others, you, Jesus, also cried.
Turning to you, Jesus, does not mean that we instantly return to a normal happy life. This kind of grief is a long journey. When we look to you, Jesus, read your word in the Bible, pray and put our faith in you, over time positive occurrences start to happen. We learn that you, God, are in total control. By this we were very blessed with the time that we had with our loved one and that in no way could have prevented their death. You, God, had long ago predetermined when one is to be born and when one is to die. You, Lord, may provide family and/or friends for us that care and want to help in this difficult time. You make it possible for people with a compassion for helping others to start groups such as “Grief Share”, which shows videos on how to address the problems of grief and how to move forward in your life through it. In this group generally everyone there has lost someone close, including the directors. This reality gives them knowledge of what the ones grieving are going through and they are there to help, show support, comfort and pray for them.
Jesus, you are there for us always. With your payment for our sins on the cross; when we confess to you, ask you for forgiveness, and receive from God a cleansing of all of our sins, we are eternally saved. Jesus, you have such a deep love for us, a love that we cannot comprehend. We will always miss our loved ones, but you, Jesus, will show us the way past this intense grief and the future plans you have for us. Then when the time comes that God has chosen for each one of us to to depart this life, you, Jesus, will lead us into that beautiful paradise called Heaven and rejoin us with all of our believing loved ones. Thank you so very much, Jesus, for your incredible love, caring, saving grace, and guiding us in this life and the promise of that glorious next life with you. This will be a perfect place where we will never ever lose a loved one again. Jesus, with this promise we do not say, “goodbye” to our departed loved one, but instead we say, “UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN IN ETERNITY!”
