Hello Trio Family,
On July 4th, Americans celebrate Independence Day.
That makes me wonder why Christians don't celebrate a "Dependence Day." Jesus showed us that the key to a fruitful spiritual life is dependence on God.
Here are a few verses from the Bible about dependence for God followers:
Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Isaiah 50:10 - Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.
Romans 10:9 - If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
2 Corinthians 1:9 - Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.
We live in a time and culture that urges us to believe that we are in control of ourselves and our circumstances. We crave independence before we can even walk. But as Christians, our dependence needs to be on Jesus Christ's work and love for us and his Holy Spirit in us.
As this next week kicks off with Independence Day, maybe you can start your week (or every day) with a Dependence Day. One easy step towards that might be to start your day with a simple prayer something like this:
"God, help me depend on your dead-raising power for everything I do today.
I give each part of my day to you, and ask your Holy Spirit to work in me so that your will may be done in my life and in every single thing I do. Amen"
