Trip report for the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife and River Area on Sunday, February 23, 2013.

Number of participants: 54 + 3 leaders
Start time 8:00am
Finish time 11:20am
Distance covered: 2.0 mile
Weather:  sunny and cool at start but high 70s at the end

Although the drought is clearly having a negative effect on wild birds, this walk produced good numbers in both species and individuals.  For the second year in a row, a Great Horned Owl pair has an active nest in the park. Everyone had great views of mom in the nest but we did not find dad's day roost.  A resident pair of Cooper's Hawks was building this season's nest with fresh cut snags carried from nearby pines.  It was noticed that two American Pelicans had leg bands and we were able to read numbers on one of them. Click here for USGS Banding information on that bird.  We got all of the expected swallows, but missed commonly seen Red-shouldered Hawk and American Kestrel.

This walk was split into two parts: Park/Wildlife Area and L.A. River/Sepulveda Dam Area.  Birds highlighted in BLACK were seen in both areas, GREEN in the Wildlife Area only and BLUE in the River Area only.
