Trip report for the Wild Wings
Malibu Lagoon Bird Walk

Saturday, February 20, 2016

Number of participants: 47 + 2 leaders
Start time 8:00am
Finish time 10:05am
Distance covered: .75 mile
Weather:  67° at the start, warming to 74° sunny and calm.

This was our third Wild Wings Bird Walk at the lagoon since the controversial restoration and it is wonderful to see how the area is starting to come together.  Plants are beginning to grow which is creating diverse habitats; mud flats rim almost the entire lagoon and seawater readily mixes with the fresh water exiting Malibu Canyon.  All of this contributes to diverse wildlife opportunities.  Bird life was abundant both offshore and in the park.  We did very well with 10 species of ducks, 8 species waders and 6 species of gulls (could have had more gull species if we felt like picking through the massive flock of California Gulls!).  But I'm sure what everyone will remember was the very cooperative Osprey that book-ended our day with low fly-overs, close-up photo ops and a tussle with a very persistent American Crow.

Thank you Snowdy for helping with all of our plant questions and thanks again to all that helped with locating birds and contributing to the I.D. process - participation really makes these outings more fun for everybody!  And for those who catch it on the bird list below, the merganser we saw in the lagoon was a Red-breasted Merganser.
