Dates to Remember
Teutonia Mannerchor Club Alumni Luncheon
The next monthly alumni luncheon will be held on APRIL 23, 2019 at the Teutonia Mannerchor Club located at 857 Phineas Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Doors open at 11:00 AM and lunch is served at 11:45. Seating is limited, if you have any questions, please contact Jim Eberz (NC '64) at 412-321-4145 or Carmen DiGiacomo (NC '59) at 412-563-1859. NOTE: THE TIME CHANGE FOR THE DOORS OPENING. The cost of the luncheon is $12.65 which includes buffet lunch, soft drinks, coffee, and dessert.
At the March luncheon, over fifty NC alumni got together for food and friendship. There were two first time
attendees: Tom Way and Ken Borghese. Bob Spehar from the class of 1999 was the youngest alum in attendance.

Annual Trojan Open Golf Outing
Join us on the golf course! The 35th Annual Trojan Open Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday, May 13, 2019
at Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City. Single player $200, Foursome $750. We're kicking off the fun earlier this year with a
shotgun start at 9:30AM.

Nominations now being accepted for the 2019 Hall of Fame
Do you know a classmate who has done some charitable work that deserves recognition? Someone who is worthy of accolades for their work in the community? Someone who has done a lot for North Catholic?
The Hall of Fame is always seeking nominations for induction. We know that there are distinguished graduates, especially women, who deserve a place in the school's hall of fame, but we need your help. If you know of someone from your class or anyone who should be recognized for their accomplishments, please nominate them. Remember this not just a sports hall of fame. You can go to the school
website and for complete details. If you have questions, contact us
here. Please note that nominations are only good for three years, but they can be renewed. Nominate someone today. The committee will be meeting in January to begin the review process for this year's class.
Note: nominations that come in after May 15th will be consider for the 2020 induction class.

Alumni of the Month - Ed Dice (class of 1970)
Following his days at NC Ed attended the University of Dayton where he graduated in 1975. He and his wife Claire have been married for 45 years and are have thee children: Eddie, Dayne, and Carlie. They are also proud
grandparents of two lovely girls. Since 1979, Ed has been the owner and operator of Pennwood Heating and Cooling.
Favorite Classes and Teachers
Ed lists Coach Ron Hughes, Walt Lease, Brother Kuntz and Brother Becker as his favorite teachers
while
he was at North. As far as favorite classes Ed said, "Earth Science, Typing, Biology even Chemistry was OK and Mr Lease taught more than math with his highly entertaining life stories."
Favorite Memories of North Catholic
"The crazy lunchroom and football rallies with
car bashes, Friday night football and the ride up Troy Hill on the school bus after. Also ringing the bell after we beat Central. One thing I won't forget, the odor that came from the slaughter house and Heinz on a hot afternoon. I almost miss that sometimes ... almost."
World Events You Remember
"The assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, National Guard troops on Troy Hill, the Vietnam War where my older brother served."
Who Were Your Friends While at North?
When he wasn't working at his father's plumbing company in Lawrenceville or playing in a small music group, Ed was hanging out with his twin brother George, Dave Long, Tommy Smith, Bill Greygor, George Virostek and a few others.
What Makes You Proud of Your Days at North?
"Attending classes with those who would be my life long friends as well as playing football for a school with a well known reputation for the sport."
Any Final Thoughts?
"There was a sign in the locker room that I never forgot. I think it's as relevant today as ever and gives inspiration in good times and bad... 'Life is like a grindstone, whether it polishes you up or grinds you down depends on what you are made of.'"

Western PA Sports Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Len Komoroski (class of 1978) who will join a long line of NC greats when he is inducted into the Western PA Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 13th. Len is the CEO of the Cleveland Cavaliers and
Quicken
Loans Arena. He has also worked as senior Vice President of the Philadelphia Eagles. He began his sports career with the Pittsburgh Spirit (the indoor soccer franchise).

Tom Cook is the mentor for the Millcreek, PA robotics team 63. His team battled the NC Trojanators Team 5740 at the Pittsburgh Regional Robotics

Old friends Joe Nussbaum and Paul Crowe at a recent get together celebrate nearly 70 years of friendship.
On February 26th, 2019 Denny Koska NC'66 joined the Hole-in-One Club after 50+ years of trying.
He was introduced to golf at the former Highland CC, West View, as a caddy.
He used a 5 hybrid on the 6th hole a 151-yard par 3 at Indigo Creek Golf Club, Myrtle Beach, playing a Callaway. Denny still plays to a 13 handicap. Charlie Goulding attested the phenomenal feat.

George Marcinko recognized both Graham and Lyons. Angie DiPasquale was correctly identified by Dave Thomas (class of 1972). Jeff Witherel (class of 1966) knew Dave Lyons and Bob Miller, while Allen Goetz (class of 1980) and Jerry Sestric (class of 1980).
The only Trojanette correctly identified was Lauren Wolosik. Maggie Kutschbach Bailey (class of 2004) who added, "I babysat her when she was little!"

Military Legacy Scholarship
|
|
The school has initiated a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation's military forces. The goal is to raise $20,000 to $25,000 to provide a $1,000 scholarship annually. The scholarship will be awarded annually to the student provided certain benchmarks are met. Every four years (or sooner) it will be awarded to another incoming 9th grade student. Congratulations to this year's recipient, Griffin Floyd.
Contributions have surpassed the $11,000 mark. All money will be used to provide educational opportunities to a student. To honor those who served, please consider a contribution in any amount to the new Military Legacy Scholarship. If you wish, you may make a contribution in someone's honor/memory. Make checks payable to North Catholic, write "North Catholic Military Scholarship" in the memo, and mail to:

Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship
|
|
Kathy Hickey Monti's limitless love and passion for helping others was apparent to everybody she met. Her pride for North Catholic began in 1973, when her high school closed and she enrolled in the first co-ed class at North as a junior. Kathy led the charge to keep her school's basketball team together. As a standout guard and the very first team captain of North's first women's basketball program, Kathy and her fellow Trojanettes began a women's basketball dynasty that is alive and continues to thrive today. Following her graduation from North in 1975, Kathy played basketball in college and served as team captain and leader. Soon, she was recruited to come back to North and take on the role of Assistant Basketball Coach for the girl's team and with Coach Don Barth, her mentor, friend and former coach, led them to win multiple state championships. When North opened in Cranberry Township, Kathy continued to volunteer her time at the new school that she loved so dearly until her last breath. In 2017, just before her death, Kathy was voted unanimously into the North Catholic Hall of Fame. Kathy will long be remembered for her impact on hundreds of lives as a teacher, an assistant basketball coach and female role model for girls in athletics.
To continue Kathy's legacy and mission in life of helping others, a scholarship has been established in her name. More than $20,000 has already been raised. The purpose of the Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial support for a young woman who possesses the same leadership qualities that Kathy demonstrated in her life. In order to finance this scholarship and celebrate Kathy's life, we hope you can join us by donating HERE to raise the necessary funds. The NCHS Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund has awarded $4,200 Scholarships for the 2018-19 School Year to the Class of 1959 Scholars, Canaan Branch and Tess Myers.
The Fund has awarded scholarships totaling $55,000 to seven recipients since the inception of the Fund. Contributions to the Fund can be made at any time and should be sent to the North Catholic Foundation, North Catholic High School, ATTN: Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066. Thanks to many of you, our list of alumni who have served in our nation's military services has grown to almost 1,500. We thank all of you who have taken the time to help us with this endeavor. Perhaps you have noticed that recently an asterisk has been added next to name of more than two dozen individuals on the list. This indicates the individual died while in the military, either Killed in Action or a non-battle death. There may be more alumni who died while serving. If you know of someone that should have the asterisk added next to their name please let us know. We will always appreciate your efforts to help us update this honor roll of our alumni.

Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. A Reunion Aide
Bob Gierl (class of 1966) has assembled a one hour power point that he used for the 50th reunion that he says, "My thought is any class can cut/paste from this model. The images of the new school are crude walking cell phone images. I am sure there are better ones available."

NC Alumni Reunion
Debbie Bearley (class of 1983) has organized a North Catholic All Class Reunion for the weekend of August 2nd 2019 at the Hotel Conneaut and Conneaut Lake Park. There are rooms blocked off for this this family friendly weekend. Saturday, August 3rd will be a buffet-dinner dance. The cost of the dinner dance has not be set as yet. Ryan Cronin and some others have organized a 15th reunion. It will be held at Cafe Fifth Avenue, 818 5th Avenue, Pittsburgh 15219 on June 22nd beginning at 5 PM.

North in the News
School News
The North Catholic Chapter of the National Honors Society is hosting a Recycle-rama on May 18th. We will be collecting various goods such as electronics, batteries, shredding services, old sports equipment, used books, as well as some pet supplies. So, if you've got anything laying around the house that needs recycling, bring it here! More details about the event will appear in next month's newsletter.
Next year North Catholic will offer a class called The Science of Cooking. The school is in need of cooking supplies. Please consider donating new or gently used cooking equipment (eg pots, pans, mixing bowls, etc) to the school. Items can be dropped off at North. You can contact Megan Benzing at
mbenzing@northcatholic.org if you would like to help with the class in some way.
Students in Mrs Bucci's art class have been busy this year producing a variety of creations. Here is a small sample:
Congratulations to Anthony Rivetti and Olivia Solverson (pictured with Principal Luke Crawford) who were named National Merit Scholarship finalists.
The robotics team (FRC Team 5740) scored well in recent competitions. The team won the Engineering Inspiration Award, which includes a $5,000 grant, as well as qualification for Worlds in Detroit. Thomas Franco, mechanical lead, won the Dean's List Award.
The career development students are pictured with Coach John Mitchell of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He shared his experiences with his career in professional sports as well some great life lessons.
The AP Language and Composition Class traveled to Franciscan University of Steubenville to learn about Bioethics from the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. They heard a lecture and discussion with Dr Lee and Dr Dorosky of the Franciscan faculty.

Trevor Huddleston is competing in original oratory at the NCFL nationals. He is the diocesan champion in oratory this year. The duo of McKenzie Waslosky (far right) and Christa Intong (left) are also competing at the NCFL nationals. The team of Gabby Karanikos and Tom O'Toole will be competing at the NSDA nationals in June in Dallas
Tom O'Toole competed through the final rounds in prose interpretation. He finished third in the state.
Sophie Strumm and Gabby Karanikos competed through the final rounds of news broadcasting and finished 5th in the state.
NC Drama
This year's spring musical is "Anything Goes." The musical
will run April 26 and 27 at 7:30 and April 28 at 2:30. Tickets will be available on Ticketleap.com after April 10th. Tickets are $8.00 on line; $12.00 at the door for general admission -- $10.00 for seniors and students.
North Catholic Drama Department Community Service:
For each spring musical, the
drama
department participates in a
service project.
This year, the
drama
department
's
community
service
project is to send felt angels to people in the
community
who may need one. This is similar to a prayer intention.
We would love to share this will the alumni community! If there is anyone in your life who would benefit from an angel, let us know and one can be sent on your behalf! This can be someone who is feeling down, or someone who is celebrating good news. Basically, a little "thinking of you" gift. There is no charge to send an angel.
The cast and crew of the musical will be responsible for assembling and mailing the angels out.
If you would like an angel sent to someone in your life, please send me an email with the following:
- Your name
- The recipient's name
- Your relation to the recipient
- Their address (will not be made public)
- A special message (if any)

NC Girls Basketball
North Catholic Girls Basketball ended their regular season 19-3, going 12-0 in the section to win a 35th Section Championship & also qualified for WPIAL playoffs for a record setting 44th time.
They went on to win a WPIAL Championship - defeating Central Valley in a second half come back. That was the Trojanettes 18th WPIAL championship.
And of course, they got to ring the bell.
They made it to the 4A PIAA state championship game in Hershey PA after defeating McKeesport, Blackhawk, Villa Maria, & Mifflinburg before finally falling to Bethlehem Catholic In the state final. Coach Rottman

NC Boys Basketball
After their second place finish in the WPIAL, the Trojans advanced to the PIAA state championship plays, but unfortunately were eliminated. Overall it was a good season for the boys.
NC Swimming
At the WPIAL Championship in March, Brooke Carmazzi came in 2nd in the 100 meter butterfly. Kyle Maziarz finished in second in one meter diving. At the PIAA championships, Kyle Maziarz won the diving championship and became a two time state champion.
NC Ice Hockey
Congratulations to Madison Thome who signed a letter of intent to play hockey next year at SUNY - Morrisville.
