Trojans News

Our 9th grade students attended a Career Fair last week, hosted by staff members and 11th-12th grade students who are part of each career-related study offered at the HSWCHS. They completed a survey at the end of the experience to select their top three choices, which will be used by administrators and counselors to make choices about course offerings and scheduling in the 2020-2021 school year. Career-related studies are part of the Career Academies model at the HSWCHS.

A Career Academies model allows us to offer more career-based electives so that students are more likely to not only graduate, but to have as many options, certifications, career knowledge, hands-on experiences, and/or college credit as possible when they graduate.

HSWCHS students in Family and Consumer Science (FACS) classes brought to life monster characters created by Oaklawn Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School kindergarten students! Kindergarten students enjoyed an assignment earlier in the school year to imagine a monster and describe it in detail by providing it with a name, personality traits, preferences and interests, and a detailed drawing. The completed monster projects were passed along to students in FACS classes at the HSWCHS, who used them as inspiration for lessons in sewing. FACS students chose the most carefully described monster projects, and have worked for weeks to sew monsters that resemble as closely as possible those that kindergarten students imagined. Last week, kindergarten students who had a monster project chosen by a FACS student were presented with a little monster to take home. Mrs. Gardner brought FACS students by bus to make in-person presentations at OVPA. FACS students also read “Leonardo the the Terrible Monster” to kindergarten classes.
Leadership Hot Springs Group Attends Government Day at State Capitol

The Leadership Hot Springs (LHS) Youth/Adult group participated in State Government Day at the Arkansas State Capitol. Their trip included a meeting with Governor Hutchinson, Citizenship Test, tour of the Capitol grounds, participation in a joint session of the state Education Committee, lunch with Arkansas legislators, and more! Youth Leader Mrs. Debbie Ugbade - member of the LHS Board of Directors and our HSSD School Board - is pictured with our Hot Springs World Class High School representatives who are part of the LHS Youth group (which includes kids from across Garland County).

First Security Bank representatives including Penny Pockets, First Security Bank Kids Club Savings Program mascot, presented to Park Magnet second grade students about the importance of saving money. The presentation follows a Unit of Inquiry based on Economics. Assistant Vice President Heather Busch presented to an excited group and discussed how early students should start saving money (as soon as possible), where money should be stored (in a safe place, like a bank), and why families need money (for food, shelter, transportation, fun, and more!). Ms. Busch and Penny Pockets encouraged students to look into Kids Savings Accounts at any bank, to help begin good money saving habits, and to learn about how interest can help saved money add up!
Leadership Hosts Superintendent's Student Council at HSWCHS

HSSD Superintendent Dr. Nehus and Admins met last week with Hot Springs World Class High School student members of the Superintendent’s Student Council. Our #TrojanEats food truck served a tasty lunch during the meeting. Students shared challenges and concerns across a broad range of topics including student-to-teacher ratios, additional class opportunities, student involvement with extracurricular offerings, schedule ideas, and more. Dr. Nehus brings together students from a different HSSD school during quarterly Superintendent’s Student Council meetings to engage in informal discussion with our kids and listen to student input about the district.

Our HSSD Dance Troupe was honored to perform "Equity Walk" in the National Park College Black History Month Celebration this week, at the NPC Campus. Watch the full video, via The Sentinel Record, here.

Members of the Church Women United group delivered school supplies donated by area churches to our Langston Elementary Leadership Academy, as part of their “Spreading the Love 2020” campaign. Thank you to local women and congregations who participated! ‬

Inspiring Student Presentations, about Inspiring People, at Gardner ... Third grade students at our Gardner STEM Magnet School completed the Creative, Inventive, and Notable People Unit with a final project to include research, slideshows, and presentations.

You all inspire me every day with the love and kindness that you give to our students and to one another. Even through all of the challenges I know that you deal with, you show love to our kids and to this community. I’m so proud of you for that, above all things. I also have two anonymous shoutouts to share to our Oaklawn team! Trojan ‘Good Things’ is a weekly shout out from #HSSD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Nehus to individuals in our school community who are doing amazing things! Read more, here.

Download the "Hot Springs School District" app from your app store (for FREE of course) to quickly and easily access HSSD News, Calendars, a quick link to the Home Access Center (HAC), Lunch Menus, the Student Handbook, and more! We look forward to utilizing this additional communication tool to help keep our students, families, and community as well informed as possible.
Let's work to stay healthy, together! HSSD families, please remember that January - March is the peak of flu/sickness season. What are everyday preventive actions we can all take to avoid spreading germs?

1) Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. OR, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

2) If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you (or your child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone. Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

3) Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. After using a tissue, throw it in the trash and wash your hands.

4) Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs that can cause respiratory illnesses like flu.
