Meet our two newest HSSD Assistant Principals, Mr. Wells at Hot Springs World Class High School - as of last week, and Mrs. Anderson at Oaklawn Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School - in July. Read interview details, here.
Geography Bees, hosted for HSSD 4th-8th grade students, took place this week for all four elementary schools and our Hot Springs Junior Academy. This national geography competition is designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Questions cover not only geography, but also cultures, physical features, history and earth science. Winners from each HSSD Geography Bee will take an online qualifying test. The top 100 scorers in the state of Arkansas will advance to the Arkansas GeoBee, which will take place this spring. The winner of the Arkansas Geo Bee will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the National Geographic Bee, which will be held in Washington D.C. next May.

Competitions were held in classrooms to determine the semifinalists, who then competed in a run-off to to determine the 10 finalists. The top 10 finalists were part of competitions this week. We are proud of all students who competed, and anxiously await results of whether our winners will qualify to compete in the Arkansas GeoBee. Amid the various tactics used for fostering student learning and achievement, teachers develop various creative strategies to keep young minds at work. Langston 4th grade students in Mrs. Limbaugh’s class choose from multiple learning centers and daily supplemental reading for time between assignments. Many enjoy most the daily rebus puzzle. A rebus is a puzzle device that combines the use of illustrated pictures with individual letters to depict words and/or phrases. Rebus puzzles are a fun way to reinforce reading skills, build and refine critical thinking, and the puzzles expose students to new vocabulary and ideas during discussion as a class at the end of each day.
Our OVPA Jr. Beta Club was selected to be the featured group in the January R.I.S.E. (Reading Initiative for Student Excellence) Spotlight! They were chosen for their "Betas, Books, and Babies" project - which was a partnership with CHI St. Vincent Hospital to supply books to newborn babies. R.I.S.E. is a program of the Arkansas Department of Education Division of Elementary & Secondary Education.
