Trojans News

Second grade students at our Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School completed an “I Have a Dream” assignment modeled after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Mrs. Avery read books focused on the life and work of MLK to her students and then assigned them the task of identifying a dream of their own, that could bring positive change. Students used their writing time to create artwork from their own experiences and opinions to communicate their own dreams for future change. Read more about this memorable project, here.
HSJA Students Attend MLK Living History Presentation
by Sarah Collins Rudolph

Our Hot Springs Junior Academy 7th & 8th grade Gifted and Talented Program students were extended a special invitation by the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission to attend “The Fifth Girl” program at Booker Arts Magnet Elementary in Little Rock. Mrs. Sarah Collins Rudolph was the featured "Living History" speaker in celebration of MLK Day activities. Mrs. Rudolph was in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, during the church bombing of 1963. Her sister was one of the four lives lost. Mrs. Rudolph shared with students about her experience in the church, the injury that permanently blinded her in one eye, and the challenges she faced after the bombing.
Students heard about segregation and the fight for civil rights during the 1960s in Birmingham, as well as the long road before the bombers were brought to justice. Her message to students was one of hope, optimism, and unity.
Gardner Students Create Collaborative MLK Artwork
To help students reflect upon and remember the important work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our Gardner students in Mrs. Jackson's class collaborated to create this portrait. They discussed famous MLK quotes as they worked together to produce this memorable artwork.
Park Students Honor MLK Day with "Free to Be Me" Celebration

First grade students at our Park Magnet, an IB World School, read about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and focused on stories from his childhood. Mrs. Sligh’s class reflected about how he used experiences of being treated unfairly in his childhood to help create changes when he was an adult. Students created “Free to Be Me” necklaces to celebrate who they are as individuals, to celebrate the friendships that they all share, and to remind of the importance of celebrating our differences in love and kindness.
HSSD Students Attend Broadway Musical "Wicked"
Our Hot Springs Junior Academy Choir & Hot Springs World Class High School Thespian students went to see the memorable Broadway Musical, "Wicked"at Robinson Performance Hall (Little Rock). Students enjoyed a sensational show and learned about appropriate etiquette, musical production, and the many careers available in arts and drama.

My shoutout this week goes to all of our students who experienced academic improvement in the second nine weeks! Congrats to all of our kids who received academic awards, academic improvement awards, or leadership awards of any kind including our Terrific Kids Awards and Leader in Me Awards; AND congrats to our secondary level students who saw any kind of growth in their grades or test scores. Growth and learning is hard work, and we are so very proud of your hard work and your progress!
