Trojans News

The OVPA production of the musical “Cinderella” is this week! Join us Tuesday, March 10 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 12 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Productions are free to attend by all. This is also a very special production, because it is our 20th anniversary production and the last to be performed in the Oaklawn Auditorium (as our Oaklawn students and staff members will move to the building at 701 Main Street in the 2020-2021 school year.

Our Oaklawn staff members invite all OVPA alumni (anyone who has been in an Oaklawn production since 2000) to attend “Cinderella” to give this auditorium a nostalgic goodbye and offer celebration toward changes ahead!

One of the most special things about productions at our OVPA is that they include any 1st-6th grade OPVA student who wants to participate. OVPA Theatre Teacher Mrs. Roxanne Kirchhoff shared that she finds the story of Cinderella inspiring to audiences of all ages because it’s a tale of “how ultimate kindness and hard work can take people as far as they want to go in life!.”

Our HSJA students in Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) classes have worked over a series of weeks to learn the skills necessary for designing, planning/budgeting, and preparing healthy meals. JAG Facilitator Mrs. Goodman invited the new Chartwells Mobile Teaching Cart to her classes, so that students could be part of a hands-on demonstration in healthy meal preparation. Friday and tomorrow, students are shopping with a $25 budget at the Albert Pike WalMart, and will purchase items to take home with them and prepare a meal for their families. Learn more, here.

As a special project to honor and study Black History Month, 5th grade students in Ms. Hicks’ class at our HSSD Langston Elementary Leadership Academy worked together with partners to create biographies of famous African Americans. Ms. Hicks pointed out - the primary purpose of this project was to make connections between individuals and events in history that impacted the United States. Some of the those chosen included Ella Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker, Harriet Tubman, Ray Charles, and Langston Hughes. “This was important for our kids because they learned how these people paved the way and helped create a world for unity …,” she said. The lesson combined reading and social studies standards, and created collaborative, memorable experiences for our kids - about actual historic heroes!
Talented cast members in the short play "Alice," from ou r Hot Springs World Class High School Theatre Classes, ventured to the Garland County Library last week to share their talent with the community, and our Langston Elementary Leadership Academy families during their Garland County Library Nigh t event. Over 70 were part of an excited audience, who experienced the story coming to life, and played “Pin the Grin.” See the show performed next week at our HSWCHS Mackey Theatre, on Friday 3/13 at 10:00 am and 5:30 pm, and Saturday 3/14 at 10:00 am.
The HSSD is proud to offer Pre-K options for students at all four of our elementary schools. Each program is unique, in terms of cost, student qualification factors, curriculum, and other details. Learn more about what each program can offer your child, here ..

I have four outstanding, anonymous shoutouts to share from across the HSSD with you … for our Mrs. Crawford at Gardner STEM Magnet School, Mr. Lenox, Mr. Shepard, and JAG students/Mrs. Goodman at Hot Springs Junior Academy, and theatre students/Ms. Potts at Hot Springs World Class High School!
