UPDATE: 
VSU Founder's Day activities were postponed last week due to inclement weather.  Founder's Day activities have been rescheduled for
Wednesday, March 18, 2015.  

S outhside Virginia Community College President and  VSU alumnus Dr. Al Roberts (M.Ed. '76)  will  deliver the keynote address for Virginia State University's 133rd Founder's Day Convocation. 

 

Dr. Roberts has been making a difference in the lives of Southside Virginians throughout his nearly 40-year career in education and community service.  He began his career as an instructor at Norfolk State University in 1976.  Dr. Roberts came to Southside Virginia Community College in 1995, where he has held several administrative positions, including Director of Campus Without Walls and Student Support Services, Dean of Off-Campus Instruction, Vice President for Workforce Services and Continuing Education and Provost.  On August 1, 2014 Dr. Roberts became SVCC's 5th President.

VSU Fills Five "Mission Critical" Positions 

Five key administrative positions that Dr. Hammond, VSU's interim president, terms "mission critical" have been filled, including a new top financial officer.


 

Kevin Davenport will leave Virginia Commonwealth University to become VSU's vice president for administration and finance. At VCU, Mr. Davenport was treasurer and director of treasury services. He will replace David Meadows, who was named executive vice president of Governors State University in Illinois.


 

 

Letizia Gambrell-Boone will join VSU as vice president for student affairs. She comes to VSU from Hampton University, where she has served as senior director in academic and student affairs and special assistant to the president. The VSU post was last held by Michael Shackleford.


 


Pamela L. Munden-Orr was named VSU's new director of alumni rela tions. She previously was an admissions counselor/alumni recruitment specialist at VSU.


  

 Eddie L. Perry Jr. has been appointed chief of 

 police after serving as the acting chief since April  2014.  In his 19 years of law enforcement service  within the Commonwealth of Virginia,he  has served  as Chief of Police at Mary Washington University  and Thomas Nelson Community College. 


 
 


Ramona L. Taylor, previously assistant commonwealth's attorney for the city of Richmond, will serve as the university's new general counsel.
VSU Women's Basketball Team Set For Tonight's NCAA Division II Tournament Game  

 

The #8 seeded VSU women's basketball team (19-9) will face the #1 seeded Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania (26-4) in the first round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tonight at 7:30 p.m. 

 

This will be the second meeting between the two teams. In 2010, the Vulcans defeated the Trojans 70-62 in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball South Atlantic Regional tournament held at Cal. U.


In his ninth season, Head Coach James Hill, Jr. has led the Trojans to their third trip to the NCAA Division II Basketball Regional Tournament. Previous appearances were in 2014 and 2010.

Nine new jobs coming to Petersburg

Dr. Jewel Hairston, VSU's Dean of the College of Agriculture,  Petersburg Mayor Howard Myers, and Dr.  Hammond pose for a photo during the Governor's announcement on March 4th that Big Trouble Malting and Spirits will open a new malting facility and craft distillery in the City of Petersburg. 

The company will invest just under a million dollars and create nine new jobs in Petersburg, while sourcing all of its needed feedstock - or more than 40,000 bushels of barley, wheat, rye, and fruit - from Virginia agricultural producers. The Commonwealth is partnering with Petersburg and Big Trouble on this project through the Governor's Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund (AFID).

The Trojan baseball team has made VSU program history by ranking ninth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Week 4 Poll.  The Trojans are 8-2 overall after splitting a double header against the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University on March 8.

VSU Alumni Association Alumni Award Nomination Forms 

Each year, the Virginia State University Alumni Association offers a number of awards to individuals and chapters who have made a positive impact on the University, the Alumni Association, and the community at-large. Nominations for candidates are solicited from members and active chapters within the VSU Alumni Association.  Annual Awards include the prestigious Alumnus of the Year Award, the Chapter of the Year Award, the Chapter President of the Year Award, the Young Trojan Award, the Orange and Blue Award, and the Board Member of the Year Award.   Recognition  of awards take place during the University's Annual Alumni Weekend & Commencement celebration held in May of each year.   Award nomination forms are due by March 21, 2015.

VSUAA-Baltimore Chapter 

Join members of the VSUAA-Baltimore Alumni Chapter this weekend as they celebrate VSU's Founder's Day with an Alumni Mixer/Game Night on March 14th and a Church Service Observance on March 15th.

Join members of the VSUAA-Woo Woo Alumni Chapter at the 1st ever HBCU National Cheerleader and Dance Competition.  The event will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Prince Georges Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, MD.  VSU's Essense of Troy will be one of the 10 HBCU Cheer & Dance Teams in competition.

VSUAA- Richmond Metro Chapter  
 
The VSUAA- Richmond Metro Chapter will celebrate its 100th Anniversary on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M., with a gala at the Gateway Event Center on the campus of VSU.  Come and dance the night away to music provided by DJ Cool Cliff and The Appomattox Regional Governor's School Jazz Band. Proceeds from the gala will go toward the Chapter's Scholarship and Student Tuition Assistance Funds.  Tickets are $65.00 per person.

Take The 1882 Trojan Challenge 

March 6, 2015, marks the 133rd anniversary of Virginia State University's founding.  In the spirit of Trojan pride and support for our great institution and its students, from today through Alumni Weekend, April 30 - May 2, 2015, VSU's Office of Institutional Advancement is asking all Trojans and VSU supporters to accept the 1882 Trojan Challenge. 


 
The challenge is simple.  Consider giving a gift to the VSU Tuition Assistance Fund that corresponds with the University's founding year. For example, 1882 gifts can be entered as "$18.82," "$188.02" or "$1,882."  Click here and select "Other."

Enter your contribution and make sure the designation indicates "Tuition Assistance Fund". Click "Add Donation" to complete your gift.  Once you have completed your donation, post, tweet, or email why you are "Trojan Proud" and encourage others to accept the Trojan Challenge.
