Tropical style is all about comfort, ease, and utility and is eclectic by definition. The style is characterized by warm and soothing colors drawn mostly from natural elements such as the sea, sky, and vegetation.

This fun style is very representative of tropical destinations like Hawaii or Australia and more exotic places like the West Indies, Bali, and the jungles of the Caribbean. Use of natural materials like bamboo, rattan, jute, and exotic wood furniture such as teak is ubiquitous. Fabrics and accessories are usually printed with island motifs, tropical plants and materials, framed dried plants, and natural textures with simple floral prints or various topics in the jungle. By using a tropical influence, you can create a home oasis.

This month we present a curated selection from four venerable vendors who make tropical a celebration: Ibolili, Jamie Young Co., Made Goods, and Phillips Collection.

  • Stunningly refreshing and airy, the Lomond Chair is a statement piece for any oasis that invites relaxation and style.

  • The Miami Blue Console is made with Suar wood, a hardwood with a straight grain and variations in color. This beauty is also sustainable, as Suar is a fast-growing tree and easily replaced in its native forest.

  • A study in contrast, the rectangular shape married with organic curves, openings, grain, and color variations makes the Teak Slice Console an eye-catching experience.

  • The Reed Four Door Credenza is a complementary contrast of light and airy washed wood with grounded dark metal legs. The natural variations in the wood finish make each piece subtly unique. When added to the textured raffia and modern metal drawer pulls, this storage piece adds the perfect balance of form and function into any room.

  • The inspiration for this breezy designs is obvious, as is its beauty. The Barbados Oval Side Table is artisan made and wrapped by hand with off-white rope from sustainably harvested corn straw. Adjustable feet allow for simple levelling. Then for strength and stability, each is topped with a substantial slab of tempered glass.

Made Goods

  • In an abstract shape inspired by flowers, six layers of rattan, whose densely braided edges coax them into waves, provide a soft diffused light in the Alondra Chandelier.

  • Abaca with a deconstructed, casual look. Rather than weaving this natural fiber, short pieces of the rope are used to organically line the three-tiered Arricka. This chandelier -- in Bleached or Blue -- brings vivacity and movement to a space; the metal rim adds a polished touch to this more casual piece.

  • Over 100 shell bead drops are finished with two types of circular disks: luminous, reflective mother of pearl and translucent capiz. The Henry Chandelier is both dramatic and beautiful.

  • Dazzling discs of striated kabibe shell are encased in metal and beautifully connected into a drum silhouette, creating the mod yet natural look of the Lunette. Light beautifully illuminates the neutrally hued material for a chandelier whose appeal changes from day to night.

Jamie Young Co.

  • A river-bed pebble pattern in vibrant turquoise and gold leaf create the Turquoise Pebble Mirror, a stunning mirror in a simple rectangle shape.

  • A modern bohemian beauty takes woven jute to new levels in this statement-worthy mirror. Unbraided jute dangles freely from the entire oval perimeter of the Fringe Oval Mirror, giving this wall accent a relaxed but refined vibe.

  • Inspired by beautiful under water flowers and coral, the Mermaid Floral Vase is hand made in ceramic with a subtle iridescent finish as if the ocean tide just receded.

  • The aquatic inspired shape on the Snorkel Vases (set of 2) are accented with a blue reactive glaze. This dynamic glaze creates unique color variations in light and dark blue tones similar to the ever-changing blues in the ocean’s tide.
Phillips Collection

  • Made from metal with a glossy lacquer finish, Flower Wall Art is perfect for any space. The different sizes create a unique appeal. Available in a variety of colors.

  • Decorative, geometric, and chic, the resin composite Sonic Round Vases (Wide, Short, and Tall) add of pop of whimsy to any tropical setting, even outside.

  • Orchids represent beauty and strength, and are often recognized as a symbol of luxury. Skilled artisans have crafted the Orchid Sprig Wall Art series, stunning metal wall sculptures in a warm copper or white finish in two sizes.

Tan lines, palm trees, toes in the sand, the aroma of tanning oils in the air, and an ice cold beverage in hand…most would agree that combination sounds like a dream you never want to wake up from. Southwest Florida is a perfect place to make that dream a reality. The hard part is designing a room that immediately takes you to that place without making it look like a cheesy hotel lobby, and area rugs are no exception. Many different types of rugs can be used in a tropical setting, and none of them need to have palm fronds or coconuts.

The concept less is more, goes a long way when trying the achieve a tasteful tropical look. Not everything has to have a floral print and wrapped in wicker. Area rug are a great way to bring in bold colors, texture, and tie all the components in your room together. Coastal, contemporary, and even traditional rugs can all be used interchangeably especially when using certain colors.

Some specific hand-knotted rugs that work great in a tropical themed rooms are as follows:

  • Ziegler
  • Grass
  • Over-dyes
  • Oxidized Rugs

These rugs range from traditional to contemporary, and some are more transitional, meaning they can sway both ways depending on how you use them. The bottom line is you do not need a tropical lifestyle brand logo on your rug for it to transform your room into a tropical paradise. Area rugs are a lot more versatile than the label a vendor uses to categorize them. Think outside the sand box and create a unique setting that immediately takes you to warm beach with a cool breeze.
