SEVERE WEATHER NOTIFICATION | WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25, 2024

Kiawah is predicted to experience tropical storm force winds (gust up to 73 mph) Thursday afternoon and night due to Tropical Storm Helene, which is currently in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is expected to make landfall tomorrow evening in the Big Bend area of Florida as a major hurricane.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for coastal South Carolina. Kiawah may receive 1-3 inches of rain tomorrow. If the rain comes rapidly, expect isolated flash flooding and standing water on roads. Winds are expected to peak Thursday evening and tornadoes may occur. Storm surge inundation of 1-3 feet above sea level could be possible. In this situation, water can rise from the ocean, river and marsh sides.


The storm may cause trees and limbs to fall, debris, flooding and power outages. Strong rip currents are predicted.

COMMUNITY PREPARATIONS


The town, community association, and Kiawah entities are coordinating storm preparations. 


KICA has lowered pond water levels in the largest drainage basins to accommodate the predicted rainfall and drainage gates have been closed to incoming tides.
