"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

It's Not All About You
The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) held its annual International Conference in Orlando in mid-October. Featuring dozens of national speakers, wide variety of professional development workshops and 3,000 attendees, it was undeniably the event of the year for industry knowledge-sharing.

While sessions on social media, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), global diversity and communications ROI packed the agenda, the resounding message throughout the event was one relevant to all business professionals: It's not all about you.

Before contacting someone to push your agenda, ask yourself how you can be of value to that person. For example:
- Contact reporters only with news they can use - that means taking the time to get to know them and understanding what it is they can use.
- Work to show clients and employers the value of your business function and how it impacts the organization's bottom line.
- Be an expert resource for colleagues and other professionals - share your knowledge freely.
- Be respectful of everyone's time, mindset and position - forcing your message without doing so could jeopardize the health of the relationship.
It may be common sense, but frequent reminders can't hurt, especially in the hectic business environment in which we operate: going out of your way to make it known you understand and care about other people will encourage better communication and strengthen relationships - and your ability to leverage them, when appropriate.

Lisa DeBartolo of the DeBartolo Family Foundation and ECC Executive Director Stephen Martaus
Fall began on a high note for client Early Childhood Council of Hillsborough County (ECC). On Sept. 27, the DeBartolo Family Foundation presented the ECC with its "Spirit of Humanity Award." The award - a crystal trophy and $25,000 - is given to organizations that provide extraordinary assistance to Tampa Bay residents with special needs. Only three local nonprofits will receive the award this year.
On Oct. 5, the ECC celebrated a milestone at the Glazer Children's Museum - the 25th anniversary of its Community Developmental Screening Programs. The event featured emcee Gayle Sierens of WFLA Channel 8, keynote speaker Jeannette Palencia, a mother whose child was helped by the ECC's screening program, tributes to the ECC and award presentations to community partners.

Since 1986, the ECC has screened more than 20,000 Hillsborough County children under the age of 5 for development issues, such as speech and language, vision, hearing, motor skills and cognition problems or delays. To learn more, visit
