True Love - The Musical
Not a musical revue, jukebox, nor an all sung musical, our unique fusion of dialogue, dance and song weave together historically significant musical numbers that lyrically tell our story. Classic jump blues songs by greats such as Cole Porter and B.B. King recorded on the jump blues tribute album True Love by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo provided the inspiration for this timeless musical.
True Love's Story
At The Royale, a nightclub casino in a port town during WWII patronized by gamblers and servicemen on leave, the Lady of the House Queenie, is fighting to maintain control of her club and her young lover Royce, the Casino Manager.
The Club’s Headliner Stella, has designs on Royce and plans for them to take control of The Royale together. Royce is having an affair with Stella but when he meets the new showgirl Camille, he falls for the first time in True Love.
Camille’s man has gone to war. She dreams of his return and leaving The Royale. When she receives news of her lover’s death she must rethink her future plans and find hope that she will once again fall in True Love.
The Musical Genre
Jump blues is a loud, rowdy blues influenced form of jazz that became popular in the 40’s after the hard times of the 30’s drove many big bands out of business. Dance halls and clubs needed smaller groups that could match the volume of the departed big dance bands while continuing to fuel their patron's thirst for high energy entertainment. To engage the audience in the crowded rooms, the singers would shout and the saxophonists would honk and growl earning the performers nicknames like ‘growlers’ and ‘honkers'.
Jump Blues' characteristic hard rhythmic drive and snare beat with emphasis on the 2 and 4 beat has earned the genre credit for being the forebearer of both Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues.
The Staging
The music of True Love is performed with a live jump blues band. Our musicians share the stage as featured and ensemble characters in the story either on the stage, elevated in the pit or woven into the background. Instrumental solos spotlight each of our character musicians while the lead actors and ensemble dancers perform.
The Choreography
Jump blues is high energy. It’s varying tempo and the extended instrumental interludes provide ample opportunities for showcasing the dance action of the ensemble during the performance of each number. Popular dance styles from the era serve the choreographer in conveying a strata of emotional nuance. The era is rich with dance – Lindy Hop, Jive, Be Bop and Tapping - offering exciting choreographic interpretation.
