THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JOIN US FOR MASS THIS WEEKEND

Saturday at 5:00pm

Sunday at 9:00am

Sunday at 11:00am

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PRACTICE OF FAITH

Above all things, love God; from that love, flows a love of neighbor. The mandate from this weekend's Gospel couldn't be simpler, yet love can be hard to define if we go by modern definitions and examples. Israel recognized love by the action of God in their lives, and action perfectly expressed for Christians in Jesus, whose life is the pattern of love that we follow while handing God's love on to others.

  • Examine your standard of love. Is it truly love or merely tolerance? Who is your pattern of love? Is it Jesus or someone else?

We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

STEWARDSHIP

We are called by our baptism to be missionary disciples. Archbishop Etienne eloquently affirmed this message in his recent Spirituality of Stewardship video when he said, “the starting point of stewardship is recognizing that everything we have, everything that we are is by God’s initiative---God’s grace”. Embracing stewardship allows us to experience profound joy in serving others that comes from developing, using and sharing our gifts. YOUR pledge allows us to continue the mission.

THANK YOU

Thank you everyone for all your hard work in making this another successful Fall Yard Cleanup! It’s always amazing how much growth we have to deal with that is generated over the summer, but with everyone’s help we are staying on top of this huge, beautiful yard. DID YOU KNOW???

CHRIST HIMSELF SPEAKS

The Lectionary

At every liturgy of the Church—from Sunday Mass to a communion visit by a lay minister to the Rite of Committal at a graveside—a passage from Scripture is proclaimed. At Mass, the readings come from a book called the Lectionary. The Lectionary is the same everywhere—on any given day, any Catholic Church you might visit, anywhere in the world, is proclaiming, listening to, and reflecting on the same Scripture readings.

The Lectionary is a book of carefully selected passages from the Bible. Before the Second Vatican Council, the Lectionary was fairly limited in its scope. In fact, only 16% of the New Testament and 1% of the Old Testament were proclaimed in the course of the year! The expanded Lectionary that has been used since 1969 includes a lot more Scripture, but still falls far short of including the entirety of the Bible: in the course of three years, we hear 71.5% of the New Testament, and 13.5% of the Old Testament. (The lesson here is: we are really missing out if we do not read the Bible on our own or as part of a study group, in addition to hearing the readings at Mass.)

The readings in the Lectionary were chosen with several purposes in view. The readings include key passages from the Scriptures, especially the Gospels; they illuminate the liturgical seasons; and they allow the Old and New Testaments to "speak" to one another by highlighting Old Testament passages that foreshadow teachings and events in the life of Jesus.

On Sundays, we hear three readings. The First Reading comes from the Old Testament and usually relates closely to the Gospel (except in Easter Time, when passages from the Acts of the Apostles are read). For example, when the Gospel gives us the parable of the dishonest steward from Luke, we also hear a passage from the prophet Amos about God's anger with those who defraud the poor. As the Second Vatican Council teaches: "God, the inspirer and author of both Testaments, wisely arranged that the New Testament be hidden in the Old and the Old be made manifest in the New" (DV, 16).

The First Reading is followed by a psalm—one of the 150 songs included in the Old Testament book of Psalms, which was and is the prayer and hymn book of the Jewish people. Jesus prayed the psalms; as he hung upon the cross, the words of two psalms were on his lips (see Psalm 22:1; Psalm 31:5). The psalm proclaimed at Mass is usually thematically connected to the First Reading and is called "responsorial" because we join in a sung or spoken response.

The Second Reading is often the wild card of the Liturgy of the Word. In Ordinary Time, the Second Reading is simply a semi-continuous reading of one of the New Testament Epistles, moving through the text over the course of several weeks, without reference to how the passage lines up with the other readings. In other seasons of the year, the Second Reading, like the First, may be chosen to highlight themes from the Gospel.

The third reading is from one of the four

Gospels, and is set apart in several ways. This reading is proclaimed by an ordained minister, a deacon or priest. We stand to listen. The reading is often proclaimed from a special Book of the Gospels. Candles are carried, incense may be used, and the book is solemnly carried from the altar to the ambo. Sung acclamations, particularly the "Alleluia," give special honor to the Gospel reading. Through all of these outward signs, we acknowledge the living word of God and the presence of Christ. The proclamation of the Gospel is the high point of the Liturgy of the Word.

NEXT TWO WEEKS

RUMMIKUB

Tonight - Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00pm in the Social Hall

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm in the Social Hall. We play three or four games (very flexible) and then finish with the Left, Right, Center dice game. You do not need to know how to play. Both games are simple and quick to learn, and old timers will be happy to help you learn. Open to everyone! Hope to see you!

TRUNK-OR-TREAT

This Friday, October 27 from 6:00-7:00pm

What is Trunk-or-Treat? It is a Halloween event that is often church or community sponsored. People gather and park their cars in a large parking lot. They open their trunks, or the backs of their vehicles, and decorate them. Then they pass out candy from their trunks. The event provides a safe family environment for trick-or-treaters!

CAR DECORATORS: Arrive at 5:00pm in the preschool parking lot and decorate your car. Someone will be there to direct you to the correct spaces. Awesome ideas can be found on Pinterest.

SJV PRESCHOOL FAMILIES ONLY: Arrive in costume at 5:00pm for arts & crafts, popcorn, hot cider, and activities in the covered area of the playground.

TRUNK-OR-TREATING: From 6:00-7:00pm (NOT BEFORE). All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you would like to help with this fun event, there are many ways for you to participate:

  • DONATE CANDY: Support this event by simply donating candy in the candy box in the Narthex. PLEASE NO NUTS (Snickers, Reese's, Peanut M&Ms, etc.)
  • CAR DECORATOR AND CANDY GIVER OUTTER: Fill out the registration form, and turn it into the parish office by Wednesday, October 25. Decorate your trunk and pass out candy to our trunk-or-treaters.
  • VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME: Help with security/parking, arts & crafts, popcorn making, or clean up. Please check where you would like to help on the registration form, and turn it into the parish office by Wednesday, October 25.

PREPARES

Fill a Bag Before the End of October

In response to Right to Life Month, our Parish is filling bags for the “Prepares Ministry Program.” Please take a blue bag from the rack next to the St. Vincent de Paul bin. Each bag has a target age and check list on it. Please put one or two of the items from each section of the check list in the bag to help support a family in need who has CHOSEN LIFE! Check off the items you have placed in the bag and return the bag to the St. Vincent de Paul bin when it is completed. The bags will be distributed to families in our neighborhood who call in need of financial support with rent, utilities, or food through our St. Vincent de Paul society. If they have a child from pregnancy through 5 years old, we will give them one of the PREPARES Bags as an additional sign of love, gratitude, and hope for their child or children.

ALL SOULS

The month of November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory, whose feast is celebrated on November 2.

We will be remembering our dearly departed from the past year with a slideshow of their pictures. If you would like to participate, please send a picture of your departed loved one and her/his name to [email protected] by Monday, October 30.

You may also bring a photo of your deceased loved one from the past year to the parish office to be placed on a table by the baptismal font for the month of November. Please make sure the name of the person pictured, your name, and contact info, are on the back of the picture so we can get the photo back to you at the end of the month.
