"Share more in the moment,” suggests Facebook in its promotion of its live streaming service Facebook Live. “Going live provides real-time engagement and can help increase exposure and build relationships with your audience.”
The student who used Facebook Live to flash an automatic gun full of ammunition inside a local school January 26, 2024 ended up with more exposure than he and an accomplice needed.
Another student concerned about a weapon in class went to a trusted adult. Memphis Shelby County Schools security officers were notified and an investigation got under way. The anonymous student who reported the gun took a still photo of the streaming. The photo helped officers identify the classroom where the gun was flashed.
Cameras showed the first student with the handgun pass it to another student inside a backpack. The second student left the backpack sitting in the classroom where it was found. Inside was a black 9mm Glock 45 with an extended magazine. The gun contained 34 live rounds and a fully automatic switch.
The two students with the gun and backpack were arrested and transported to Juvenile Court. Both have been expelled.
Congratulations to the Overton High School student who believed in CrimeStoppers’ Trust Pays program and campus safety and said something. Kudos to the school for using the Trust Pays program. A prohibited weapon has been confiscated and the potential loss of life ended.
As of this month, 222 guns have been removed from participating local schools in the history of Trust Pays. For more information: here.
Trust Pays report leads to
drugs including fentanyl
The problem of marijuana and THC vape devices in local schools has been on the rise, but one Trust Pays report of a gun inside a vehicle on a school parking lot led to a major drug bust recently.
The vehicle was searched and although no gun was found, a variety of dangerous drugs was located. The cache included 10.5 grams of marijuana, 3.7 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms, and 19.7 grams of a white powdered substance that tested positive for fentanyl.
The student who drove the car to campus that day was expelled and transported to Juvenile Court. The drugs were tagged into the Memphis Police Department’s Property and Evidence Room.
Kirby High School is today a safer school.
According to AddictionResource.net, “Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is well-known for its extreme potency. Due to its high potency, it is one of the most dangerous and unfortunately also one of the cheapest opioids found on the street today.”
Twenty grams of fentanyl would have a street sales value of up to $4,000 and could kill dozens of people, as the drug is 50 times more powerful than heroin, and sometimes is laced with poisonous compounds.
One of the major problems with fentanyl sold on the street is that there is no way to know how much fentanyl sold powder actually contains, and it is one of the easiest opioids to overdose on.
