WTAMU Graduate Student Named AMSA Student Board President

Congratulations to Ryan Heitschmidt '24 for being elected as the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) Student Board President.


Heitschmidt explained that he has been a member of AMSA for over two years and throughout that time he has had the opportunity to attend conferences, meat science quiz bowl competitions and to conduct research as an undergraduate.


Heitschmidt shared what he is looking forward to during his time as Student Board President.


"I plan to continue our outreach efforts and cultivate a nationwide community of students in meat science," Heitschmidt said. "I see this position as a way of not only supporting students across the country, but also giving back to an organization that has played such a pivotal role in my personal and academic growth."


Previously, Heitschmidt served as the South Region Director for the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana while serving on the 2024-2025 AMSA Student Board.

Pre-Healthcare Club

Hosts Guest Speakers

During their March meeting, the WT Pre-Healthcare club hosted multiple guest speakers to talk about their different careers in medicine.


Dr. Montana O'Dell, who works at Amarillo Family Physicians Clinic, a family medicine practice in Amarillo, visited with club members about the different paths he took throughout his career and the many aspects of family medicine.


Additionally, medical technician, Annali Flores '23, spoke with students about her role in a clinic and the medical procedures that she assists in.


Also in attendance were Dr. Armando Salcido '06 and Kahrena Thompson '22, who also shared with club members about their experiences, specifically in physician assistant school.

Ranch Horse Team Wins

D1 Champion Team

Congratulations to the WT Ranch Horse Team for their Division 1 Championship win at the Bryan Kick-Off Classic.


The Team traveled to Bryan, TX last week to compete at the show, hosted by the Stock Horse of Texas (SHTX) association. Students competed in events such as ranch riding and ranch cutting, each in their respective classes, which are determined by their experience and winnings.


WT not only claimed the title of Champion Team at this show but achieved high individual awards, including Non Pro Reserve Champion and all top three placings in the Novice class.

Research Highlighted at the 20th Annual Research Fair

The Faculty and Student Research Poster Session and Research Fair was held on March 6 at the WTAMU's Cornett Library.


This event featured an estimated 90 research posters which will remain on display until the March 21.


Posters covered a variety of topics such as environmental issues, voter trends and law enforcement concerns within rural communities.
