March 2018
Photo of the Month

In a rare moment, three of our Red & White Holsteins were photographed together eating. Here are Delaval, Lobster and Rapsidy in all their red glory! We only have 11 Red & White cows in our adult herd of 175, so seeing three in a row is pretty lucky. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Cash Cow

We had one double-winner in our February CA$H COW contest! Congrats to Learn & Play Daycare in Evansdale for finding two $5 jugs.

We will label 3 jugs with the big cash prize of $100 in March. Best chances to find them are right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!
Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

The Real Deal:
Just in time for your Easter gatherings, we have a coupon for Try Pies.
$1.00 off any 6" or 9" Try Pie!
Limit two uses per customer per day.

We're also serving up pie a la mode at our stores on March 14 (Pi Day). More details below

Introducing our new managers
Dee Dee Scott
Debbie Reif
Hansen's Dairy would like to introduce you to new staff at our Waterloo store.

Debbie Reif is our new manager. She is a veteran from the Navy during Desert Storm. She is a single mother of five kids -- two are living on their own and three are at home. She also has one grandson. Deb loves to crochet and be with her family in her free time. Her favorite Hansen's ice cream treat is a raspberry shake topped with whipped cream and hot fudge.

Dee Dee Scott is our new assistant manager. She has lived in Waterloo her whole life. Dee Dee is very involved with her church, Heartland Vineyard, and enjoys helping with worship services and mission efforts. Her hobbies include listening to music, reading Dean Koontz or Christian books, and collecting key chains. Dee Dee is very grateful for this new opportunity to work at Hansen's Dairy. "I will always do my best to try to make all our customers feel welcome and happy about coming into the store," she said. Dee Dee wanted to give a shout-out to her friend's 8-year-old grandson, who described her this way: "You're a good person, you're always right, and you're the boss"!
Shamrock Shake time
All month long Hansen's Dairy Waterloo will be getting in the shamrock spirit with their classic Mint Chocolate Chip milkshakes.

We love this photo of Milkshake and her daughter Mint to help get people in the mooo-d for ice cream!

Add some cookie crumbles to our Shamrock Shakes for an extra chocolatey crunch, and enjoy!

Customer of the Month
Viki Fehr
The March Customer of the Month is Viki Fehr of Clutier.
Viki and her family have been buying Hansen's milk for more than 10 years from our Waterloo store. "We saw the milk store and stopped in to try it, and have loved it ever since," she said. "I love the taste and the freshness of Hansen's milk."

Viki even goes the extra mile with Hansen's heavy whipping cream. "I make butter and ice cream with Hansen's cream," she says.

Thanks, Viki! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month
Our March Cow of the Month lives up to her name.

Luck is 4 and a half years old and has given birth to three bulls.

She is a very good cow, especially for having only three teats that work! Luck was born with only three quarters of her udder that produce milk. The amazing thing is, she is our highest producing cow right now at 156 pounds of milk per today. She certainly has all the luck!
Cooking with Hansen's
Yogurt tenderizes meat much more gently and effectively than regular marinades. While acidic vinegar- or citrus-based marinades can toughen proteins like chicken breast to a rubbery consistency, yogurt slowly tenderizes them, resulting in meat that can practically be pulled apart by hand. Yogurt marinades are highly effective when left on proteins for a long period of time (like 12 hours), but they work well in the short-term too.

This recipe is adapted from, and starred ingredients can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores.
Yogurt-Marinated Greek Chicken
Prep time: 45 minutes
Marinate time: At least 30 minutes; up to 12 hours
Cook time: 1 hour
Yield: About 4 servings
  • 1 cup plain Country View Dairy yogurt*
  • 2 Tbsp California Olive Ranch extra virgin olive oil*
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 Tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 medium lemon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • freshly cracked pepper
  • 1/4 bunch fresh parsley
  • 2 pounds Bell & Evans chicken thighs, drumsticks or breasts*

To make the marinade, combine the yogurt, olive oil, minced garlic, oregano, salt, and some freshly cracked pepper in a bowl. Use a fine holed cheese grater or a zester to scrape the thin layer of yellow zest from the lemon skin into the bowl. Also add the juice from half of the lemon (about 1-2 Tbsp). Stir until the ingredients are well combined. Roughly chop a big handful, or about 1/4 bunch, of parsley and stir it into the marinade.

Add the chicken pieces and marinade to a gallon-sized zip top bag. Remove as much air as possible, close the bag tightly, and massage the bag to mix the contents and make sure the chicken is well coated. Refrigerate and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Cook the chicken on a grill OR preheat the oven to 375 degrees in preparation to bake the chicken. Place the chicken pieces in a large 9x13 casserole dish. Bake the chicken in the preheated 375 degree oven for 45-60 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
