A Note from our Executive Director

Dear Lori,

Try something new, might like it, too. This was a mantra in my house when my children were growing up. Change can be hard, and many children, even many adults, can feel anxious and hesitant when confronted with something new – a new food, a new idea, a new perspective. But, if you try something new, you might like it!

This phrase is also resonant at LEAP. Four years ago, I got a phone call from Wendi Ostroff, Director of the California Learning Center. She suggested we start something new: a diaper bank. I didn’t know if we had the capacity or the funding to make a diaper bank work, but I thought, “Try something new, might like it, too.” We tried it. We liked it. Four years and more than 200,000 diapers later, our diaper bank is no longer new, and we know we like it!

Now LEAP is preparing for more that is new. We are thinking about ways to expand our diaper bank. We are looking forward to opening our new Children’s Center in Lompoc. We are experimenting with new partnerships and new programs all the time.

Change can be scary, and LEAPing into the unknown is hard. But, like we say in my family, Try something new, might like it, too. What new thing will you try this month?
