Developments That Matter
Protecting Businesses from Cyberattacks
Last week, the U.S. Chamber hosted the latest installment of its Cyber Series-which included conversations to help businesses secure remote workspaces, deploy new telework infrastructure, and manage cyber risk in the current environment and beyond.
What's Needed from Congress Now to Save Small Business
The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on America's small businesses. The U.S. Chamber has been fighting for legislation to
support small businesses
for months, but more must be done to ensure they can weather the pandemic and continue to reopen and rebuild.
Businesses, Schools, and Colleges Need Temporary Liability Protections
Temporary liability protections need to be in the next coronavirus relief package, and it would be a mistake if they were excluded.
Why it matters. "COVID-19-related lawsuits and their consequent exorbitant legal costs could deter entities from reopening and could ultimately cripple businesses, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations both large and small," reads a
letter sent to Congress yesterday from the U.S. Chamber and a broad coalition of business associations and organizations. "Furthermore, absent the proposed liability protections, many frontline healthcare workers and facilities, as well as manufacturers of critical personal protective equipment, would be punished for their efforts in the form of costly lawsuits."
Our take. "The entire business community, universities and colleges, and local school boards across the country are all united in support for a liability safe harbor for those who adhere to public health guidelines. Inclusion of a safe harbor is critical to reopening schools and restoring our economy," said U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley in a
statement.
Consumers' Spending Rose in June
Timing is everything right now when it comes to economic data. Data points for July show the economy pulled back compared to June because of the resurgence of the virus. Data that we are still getting for June continues to show the economy was heating up before the rise in cases.
COVID-19 and the Future of Work
Last week's
edition
of Path Forward yesterday explored how remote work changes the ways we communicate with colleagues and supervisors, and what our workplaces might look like when we return to work.
Leveraging Brand Power: Family Dollar to Kellogg's on Selling in a Pandemic-Changed World
"In this time, people really turn to brands that bring them comfort," said Zion Doran, senior director, integrated promotions and partnerships at
Kellogg's
. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Kellogg's has seen demand skyrocket for foods like
Froot Loops
, Frosted Flakes and
Pringles
, she said.

Supporting Entrepreneurs & Workers with Disabilities
For the 80 kids at Milestones Day School in Massachusetts, going to school means more than receiving an education; it also means a safe place to receive therapy and develop skills for a future career.
Alex Smith-Michaels is the founder of Milestones - a school for students with disabilities. In many ways, Ms. Smith-Michaels is ideally suited for the role, as she has both autism and bipolar disorder, and has had to overcome the trauma she experienced in the educational and psychiatric systems as a result of her disabilities.

FDA Authorizes First Tests that Estimate a Patient's Antibodies from Past SARS-CoV-2 Infection
July 31, 2020 - Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the first two COVID-19 serology tests that display an estimated quantity of antibodies present in the individual's blood. Both tests from Siemens, the ADVIA Centaur COV2G and Atellica IM COV2G, are what are known as "semi-quantitative" tests, meaning that they do not display a precise measurement, but estimate the quantity of a patient's antibodies produced against infection with the virus that causes COVID-19.

News from Capitol Hill: Republicans reveal their proposal for the next Pandemic Aid bill
Unemployment Benefits Still at the Committee Level, the most controversial item is what to do with the unemployment benefits. The controversy is even within the republican ranks. The controversy stems from the fact that the original 600-dollar weekly supplement was for many recipients much more that their rate of pay when employed. If we are dealing with minimum wage employees, it more than doubles the take home pay. The question then was if the high unemployment rate was due to lack of employment possibilities or if benefit recipients preferred to continue staying at home. Although there are supposed to be some safeguards to prevent this from happening, the truth is that it is very difficult to control at the level the aid is flowing. The other unspoken issue is the fraud level being discovered in the program.

Entrepreneurial Revolution
Buying or Selling a business?
As we publish, The Zenith Investor for August 2020, we have seen how COVID-19 has impacted many businesses, to the point of extinction. The current surge of the pandemic made Think of one of my favorite movies of all time is Bill Murray's Groundhog Day. A weatherman named Phil relives each day, again and again, each day he begins to change his personality and becomes a better person; the groundhog is also named Phil. Hence, the groundhog becomes a literary double. As the legends say, the groundhog every February 2 is supposed to forecast the weather by looking for his shadow. If it's a sunny day, and he sees it, there will be six more weeks of winter. However, should the day turn out to be cloudy is alleged to mean an early spring. However, if the groundhog sees his shadow using literary and psychological terms, the shadow symbolizes the aspects of our personality that we want to keep at a distance, very much like the character in the movie.
