THE TUBAC

BUDDHIST MEDITATION COMMUNITY

SOMETIMES

Sometimes things don't go, after all,

from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel

faces down frost, green thrives, the crops don't fail,

sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war,

elect an honest man, decide they care

enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.

Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best efforts do not go

amiss, sometimes we do as we meant to.

The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow

that seemed hard frozen: may it happen for you.

~Sheenagh Pugh

Sheenagh Pugh often uses “men” as a deliberately universal, traditional term, not because she excludes women, but because she’s interrogating power, violence, responsibility, and moral failure, which she frequently frames as historically male-coded behaviors.

We all have a part in shifting the story

There is, in an overfull classroom,

a woman teaching not only history,

but compassion. There's a barista

making hearts in the foam

of every cappuccino she serves.

There's a man helping another man

on crutches as he struggles to cross

the icy street. There's a library room full of women

chanting about praying for their enemy.

There are students raising money

to help those with breast cancer and AIDS.

Two girls are laughing for the joy of laughing

'til their faces are tear-streaked

and their ribs and bellies are sore.

There's a poet who pours courage and music

into every word she shares with the world.

And another woman hears those words

and thinks, "Me. That poet is talking to me."

This is how we change the world one kind act,

one true work, one long laugh at a time. Because

now, that woman is ablaze with wondering:

What is my part in shifting the story?

~Joy Harjo, 23rd US Poet Laureate

A DEEP BOW to Warren Santoro and Jo Anne Kiser who initiated a welcome to the Tubac Buddhist Meditation Community from Rev. Joan Jiko Halifax, the Abbot of Upaya Zen Center Santa Fe to become a "Seed Sangha". The name "Seed Sanghas" refers to like-minded communities of practice and service that are dedicated to awakening in others and ourselves and in cultivating the heart of the Buddha.

"It is with this deep honoring and understanding that the Upaya community is supporting Seed Sanghas in many parts of the world. Seed Sanghas gather locally and in person, practice together and join together in acts of service as socially and environmentally engaged sanghas. They are grounded in the tradition of Upaya and follow the teachings of Roshi Joan Halifax and the spirit of Thich Nhat Hanh and Roshi Bernie Glassman".

As everything ages and passes away, may each of us accept joy and sorrow;

As everything ages and passes away, may each of us be happy and at peace
