January Blood Drive Dedicated to Ken Streater
Tucker First UMC has chosen to dedicate the January Red Cross Blood Drive to a faithful blood donor and church member, Ken Streater who passed away in December.
In his lifetime, Ken donated 168 pints of blood (over the course of 42 years). That is over 500 lives impacted! When asked years ago why he always participated in blood drives, Ken answered,
“I know I can save three lives with my single blood donation and blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, they can only come from volunteer donors.”
Be Like Ken. Donate blood.

Thumbs Up For the New DeKalb
Community Policing Unit
The DeKalb County Police Department is establishing a Community Policing Unit that is made up of seven officers who will form a relationship with civic groups, businesses, faith-based organizations, church leaders, schools, and families in the Tucker community. Their mission is to build trust, identify quality of life issues, offer resources, and provide a positive officer presence.
Officer J.R. Crego is a member of this special unit. You may remember that in December, Officer Crego worked with members of Tucker First to supply clothing, sleeping bags, tarps, and health kits to homeless individuals in our community. As the unit gets underway, there will be many opportunities to get involved and support the mission of the Community Policing Unit. Please pray for our officers and this new unit.

Cold Weather Shelter Opened
Three Days Last Week
Our Tucker First Cold Weather Refuge was opened last week from December 24 to 26. On Christmas Eve, we hosted seven males and one female. On Christmas Day and the day after, we hosted eight males and one female (both nights).
Even though our church Christmas Eve service was canceled due to bad roads and weather, Pastor Gerald served communion to the guests of the shelter that night (picture right). Also, in addition to several shelter volunteers last week, Pastor Anne was an overnight volunteer on December 25. We are grateful to the all the volunteers and police officers who keep this shelter going.

Shelter Needs Overnight Volunteers
The cold weather shelter, which operates out of our Activities Center, is in need of ten women and twenty men to serve as overnight shelter volunteers when it is operating.
The mission team is following strict CDC Covid 19 guidelines to provide a safe environment while still helping those in our community. The shelter provides a warm, safe, overnight environment for the homeless as well as anyone who has had their heat turned off. It opens at 7:00 pm and admits guests until 9:00 pm. Guests are required to leave by 7:00 am.
The shelter is only open on nights when the temperatures drop below 30 degrees without precipitation or below 32 degrees with precipitation. Due to COVID and social distancing, volunteers (wearing masks) will provide a box dinner and a box breakfast to our guests. Overnight accommodations are setup for men and women. Families with children are handled on a case by case basis.

Volunteers Needed To Assemble "To Go" Bags
Each year on the first Sunday in February, Tucker First has provided soup and sandwiches and served at the Trinity Table in Downtown Atlanta. This year, due to COVID restrictions, Trinity Table had to change their setup and switch to "To Go" bags only. No soup and no inside serving.
Because of these restrictions, Tucker First has been tasked with providing 400 "To Go" bags to Trinity Kitchen.
Ten volunteers are needed on Saturday , February 6 from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon in the Activities Center to assemble 400 "To Go" bags.
Please wear your masks and observe the COVID-19 guidelines when participating in this mission project. If you are interested in helping with this mission, please contact Becky Burnett at rsv1950@gmail.com.
