Scatter some loving crumbs!

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14

I find myself often thinking about cookies, and even as I write this, a few crumbs are tickling my chin. (I needed a cookie, or two, for inspiration!) And, I’m thinking about how much I miss Chef Tim’s glorious variety of delectable cookies, and although I haven’t sampled any of them in many months, I’m grateful that they’re no doubt being shared throughout our community as part of our church’s active food ministry, during this pandemic. I consider a cookie “a tasty morsel of love” shared with others, and I see so much evidence of Chef Tim and his staff doing just that --- sending out morsels of love, on behalf of our church, each and every week.

Let’s think about chocolate chip cookies, for a moment. There’s home-baked and store-bought, and both are delicious --- I’ve never tasted a cookie I didn’t like! Store-bought cookies all look the same --- perfectly round, uniform in size, evenly-spaced chocolate chips, and quite often, the same number of chips in each cookie (yes, I’ve researched this, just a bit!). How do they do it? We know that machines stamp out millions of cookies every second, rapidly package them, and send them on their way to stores. Homemade cookies, however, are a different “batch” altogether. They’re made by people who put love and care into each one. A homemade cookie may be misshapen, and the number of chips will vary, but that’s what makes them unique. Homemade cookies may get slightly burned on the bottom or broken somehow in the creative process, but I love these imperfections because eating a homemade cookie is somehow more satisfying, just because of its uniqueness. Don’t laugh when I say, “eating a homemade cookie is an emotional experience!”, but I really think it is --- you’re tasting an edible love note from the baker, and in doing so, you’ve made a small connection with him/her whether you realize it or not. I must admit, sometimes I gobble a cookie so quickly that I don’t take time to consider any type of “connection” . . . but, that’s just me!

Now, imagine yourself in God’s mixing bowl, in which He has added his very own special ingredient: his character! And, what a precious ingredient that is --- it definitely tops all others, and I guess you could say, it’s the absolute cherry on top! We have other ingredients, too, that make us individual. And, like homemade cookies, we also have our imperfections. All of these are combined to make us completely unique from the person right next to us. We all come in different sizes, shapes, and “flavors”, but it’s our coming together “on the cookie plate of life” that blends all of this uniqueness together to create a “glorious and delectable” church and community. And, if we had no differences --- and we were all identical --- how would we learn and grow in order to become more enriched and flavorful? This is exactly why God didn’t create us by “stamping us out” with just one cookie cutter.

This may sound a bit silly and simplistic, but I like to think of myself as a “cookie”, rolling through life, spreading crumbs of friendship and love to others ---and if I’m really intentional and sincere about living out my Christian ethics, day to day, I will be scattering Christlike “good crumbs” from the character of God that lives within me. We need God in our lives, every day, to keep us from “crumbling”. Excuse me while I stir up a batch of cookies --- maybe for a friend or neighbor --- and tuck a little note inside: ”Without you and God, I would be a crummy mess!”.

Spiritual practice:
Okay, so you’re a ‘smart cookie’. Think of ways in which you can scatter “crumbs” of goodness and joy, especially during this pandemic season when so many people are feeling lonely and need a dose of love? These days, there’s so much negative focus on our differences, so think of ways in which you can put a positive
spin on those differences. And, above all: never forget, you are a handmade creation of God --- one of a kind --- and yes, you are fearfully and wonderfully made!

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL OFFERING: Sacramento Methodist Assembly
As summer winds up this year, let's pause and remember the church camp experiences of our lives, wherever they may be.
You may remember youth camps, women's or men's conferences, marriage retreats, lay speaker schools and many more events Some people made their first commitment to Christ in a camp setting. Most remember growing closer to God.
Sadly, this year most events at Sacramento and other camps were canceled by Covid resulting in not only lots of disappointment, but also serious financial hardship. We at St. John's have the opportunity this month to support our beautiful camp in the Sacramento mountains south of Cloudcroft and ensure future opportunities with other Christians to pray, worship, play and study in God's beautiful creation. Please give generously.
