NATIONAL NIGHT OUT DAY | FIRST TUESDAY IN AUGUST
National Night Out Day on the first Tuesday in August promotes police-community partnerships in neighborhoods across the country. The event focuses on the community and raising awareness through camaraderie. By improving area relationships, the hope is to make our neighborhoods safer.
Shining a spotlight on community police programs, National Night Out increases connections between those who serve and their neighborhoods. Through a variety of programs designed to educate and improve relationships, dialogues open. Some of these programs include:
- Drug prevention
- Town watch
- Neighborhood watch
- Other anti-watch programs
One of the largest National Night Out events is on the west side of Columbus, Ohio. The Ogden Block Watch in Columbus organizes a festival that includes live music, food, and entertainment. While not all events are so large, the significant part of the occasion is community connections and safety. As these events empower the citizens, they also provide valuable information to the neighborhoods. Each year, the number of events grows, too.
In some parts of the country, the event takes place during cooler times of the year. Not only does this facilitate a better turn out, but more fun had by all.
Check with your local organizations to find out when your Night Out Day takes place.

The “dog days of summer” are named after the star Sirius. When things heat up around July and August, you’ll inevitably hear the phrase “dog days of summer.” No, this doesn’t have anything to do with canines lying around panting in the heat — instead, the phrase is a celestial reference. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, is nicknamed the “dog star” because it makes up the “eye” of the constellation Canis Major (Latin for “Greater Dog”). In Greek mythology, Canis Major is said to be a hunting dog who belongs to the legendary huntsman Orion. Cosmologically speaking, this relationship is fitting, because the three stars that make up the asterism Orion’s belt point to the “dog star” in the southern sky.
The phrase “dog days of summer” actually refers to a specific period on the calendar, from July 3 until August 11. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed these “dog days” occurred when Sirius appeared to rise with the sun, which always occurred during the summer. The idea was that the immense luminosity of Sirius along with the sun’s heat somehow created summer’s scorching temperatures. Of course, we now know this doesn’t make much sense. For one thing, Sirius is much farther away from Earth than the sun is — like 50 trillion miles farther — so the star has absolutely no effect on Earth’s climate. For another, the dog days of summer are relative to where you live on Earth, appearing earlier in the year for those living farther south and later for those in the north. Also, the position of Sirius is subject to Earth’s wobbly rotation — meaning that in 13,000 years, Sirius will instead rise in midwinter rather than midsummer. So no, “dog days of summer” isn’t an allusion to our cuddly canines, but a vestigial phrase derived from some 2,500-year-old astronomy.

What is the modern equivalent of the word “brabble”?
Quarrel
The word “quarrel” is the modern equivalent of the word “brabble”. Quarrel is defined as a noisy, angry dispute or altercation between two or more people or groups. It is usually characterized by raised voices, insults, and sometimes physical violence. Quarrels can range from minor arguments between friends to more serious, heated disputes between family members or colleagues. Quarrels can be caused by a variety of issues, such as disagreements over opinions, beliefs, or expectations. Quarrels can escalate quickly, so it is important to take steps to resolve the issue before it gets out of hand. This can be accomplished by communicating openly, listening to each other’s point of view, and finding a compromise that works for both parties.

An exciting final matchday in Group E of the 2023 Women's World Cup awaits as the United States team plays Portugal on Tuesday (3 a.m. ET, live on Fox) at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand. Meanwhile, Netherlands faces Vietnam at the same time at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The U.S. beat Vietnam 3-0 in its first game of the tournament before drawing 1-1 against the Netherlands, which means they can advance if they win or draw against Portugal. The Netherlands edged Portugal 1-0 in its first game of the tournament before sharing points with the U.S.
The United States finished as runners-up in Group E and advances to Women's World Cup round of 16 after being held to a 0-0 draw with Portugal on Tuesday.
Vlatko Andonovski's side was frustrated by a well-organized Portugal team that almost snatched victory in stoppage-time when striker Ana Capeta hit the post -- a strike that, had it gone in, would have sent the USWNT crashing out of the tournament.
- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
The USWNT will face the winner of Group G in Melbourne on Sunday in its first knockout match, likely to be Sweden who needs just a point against bottom-placed Argentina to confirm top place and the matchup.
Meanwhile, Netherlands progresses as Group E winners with a dominant 7-0 victory over Vietnam.
Defender Lynn Williams had a headed chance after 13 minutes, but watched on as Portugal goalkeeper Ines Pereira smothered the attempt. While the U.S. controlled possession in the first half and had the better chances, it could not find the right finish and the game was scoreless at the break.

What does "malfeasance" mean?
Wrongdoing
malfeasance /mælˈfiːzəns/
Definition: The act of doing something illegal or morally wrong by a person in a position of authority or trust, especially in public office.
Origin: The word "malfeasance" comes from the French word "mal faire," which means "to do evil" or "to do wrong."
Example: The CEO was accused of malfeasance when he used company funds for his personal expenses.
Wrongdoing is an umbrella term used to describe any action that is morally or legally wrong. Malfeasance is a specific type of wrongdoing that occurs when a person in a position of authority or trust, such as a public official or corporate executive, abuses their power for personal gain or engages in illegal activities. NATIONAL RASPBERRY CREAM PIE DAY | AUGUST 1
On August 1st, National Raspberry Cream Pie Day takes advantage of the ripe berries available this time of year. If you’re fortunate enough to enjoy some fresh-baked raspberry cream pie, it’s a day to celebrate!
Raspberries are the edible fruit of the raspberry plant. Not only do they grow on woody stemmed perennials, but they’re a very commercial crop, too. If their thorny stems remind you of a rose bush, that’s because they are in the rose family. Their genus name is Rubus.
Approximately 100 tiny drupelets cling together to make up one raspberry. Raspberry pulp and juice fill the drupelets. The drupelets adhere to a receptacle attached to a stem. Once the receptacle is removed, the raspberry is left with a hollow core.
When you’re eating your pie, keep in mind that raspberries are rich in vitamin C, manganese, and fiber. They also contain vitamins B1, B3, folic acid, magnesium, copper, and iron.
- All temperate regions of the world grow raspberries.
- At one time, raspberries were a midsummer crop. However, with new technology, cultivars, and transportation,
- they can now be obtained year-round.
- Did you know, an individual raspberry weighs 0.11 – 0.18 oz.
- One raspberry bush can yield several hundred berries a year.

Ain't There No More New Orleans
Derby Gisclair
·
A Western Union delivery on his trusty bicycle pauses for a moment to be photographed in 1913. I would not envy him his route over the streets of New Orleans.
In 1851, the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company was organized in Rochester, New York, and Western Union was born. At one point they were the chief technological innovator in America with the first transcontinental telegraph (1861), the first stock ticker (1866), money transfer service (1871). By 1900 they operated 1-million miles of telegraph lines and 2 international undersea cables.
They introduced the first consumer charge card (1914), teletypewriters (1923), and the ever-popular singing telegram (1933) followed by the Candygram (1959). During World War II the Western Union telegram was considered by many to be the harbinger of bad news from the War Department.
The company has been restructured and reinvented several times over the years but is still in business. Delivery boys on their bicycles were phased out long ago.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

Friday Night Wine School - Price Point Challenge Blind Wine Tasting
Friday, August 4, 2023, Sold Out
We're going to have some fun tonight with a blind, price point challenge wine tasting, as we present a selection of wines without knowing their prices. We'll have you taste each wine, assess its characteristics, and then attempt to guess the price range of each wine based on its perceived quality and complexity. Here's how it will work:
Alex and Beth will choose a diverse selection of wines from different regions, grape varietals, and price points with whites, reds, rosé, maybe a sparkling or an orange...We'll have the bottles in paper bags to hide their labels and provide you with scoring sheets that allow you to rate each wine based on your overall impression and estimated price range for each wine. We'll taste each wine with no information, and then unveil the bottles and discuss the wines and producers doing the big reveal at the end. Anyone who guesses all 5 price ranges correctly will get an EXTRA $5 to apply to their wine purchase.
Come play with us! The price point challenge wine tasting is not only entertaining but also a great way to work on your wine-tasting skills and understanding of wine value. It will challenge your palates and perceptions while being fun and educational at the same time! Go here for tickets, Price Point Challenge
Friday Night Wine School - Wines of Lebanon with James Moises
Friday, August 11, 2023, Sold Out
There is a reason that the Roman Temple of Bacchus is in Lebanon - considered one of the earliest wine-producing areas of the world, the Lebanese, at that time the Phoenicians, have been making wine in the region since 5000 BC. They enjoyed a very vibrant and productive wine culture that fueled the local economy through travel and trade until Ottoman rule began in 1516. Under Sharia law, wine consumption and production were forbidden and the once prolific region became a wine desert for some 350 years. In 1857 a group of Jesuit priests living in the area asked to plant vines to make wine for ceremonial purposes. Their plantings of Cinsault marked the beginning of wine production in its best terroir, the Bekaa Valley. Third-generation Lebanese American, Oregon winemaker, international wine importer and local physician, James Moises represents the largest selection of Lebanese wines in Louisiana and maybe in the US! He just received a whole boatload of Lebanese wine (literally!) last week and he's anxious to share them with us as we discuss the main wine regions, terroir and production methods. We hope you'll join us! Get your tickets here: Lebanon
Friday Night Wine School - Oceans to Mountains, Historical & Geographical Influences in Chile & Argentina
Friday, August 18, 2023, 10 Spots Remaining
While the wine regions of Chile and Argentina share a 3000+ mile border, they couldn't be more different in terms of climate, altitude, soil, grape varieties and overall grape-growing conditions. The Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean have a profound impact on the terroir of their wine regions, as Argentina greatly benefits from the barrier that the Andes provide, while Chile, on the other side of the mountain, benefits from its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. But it's not just geography that has shaped these 2 prolific wine regions. Settled by different peoples at different times, history has played a significant role in forming wine production in Argentina and Chile. The wine industries in both countries have deep-rooted historical backgrounds that have influenced grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and the overall wine culture. Join us tonight as we taste wines from both countries and discuss how history and geography have shaped these prolific wine regions. Get your tickets here Oceans and Mountains

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

New Orleans native Victor Schmitt, who worked as an international fashion model, will sign copies of his memoir, JACK IN THE BOX, Finding MY Hidden Truth and Purpose in the Game of Life, at Barnes & Noble, 3721 Veterans Blvd. in Metairie, on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 12 noon.
As part of Barnes & Noble Metairie’s 27th Anniversary Author Celebration, Schmitt will talk with readers and autograph copies of the book that details his early life in New Orleans, his abusive childhood and his career as a model and actor in runway shows, print ads and commercials for the world’s top clothing designers. Dividing his material into “boxes,” Schmitt discusses his life and the greater issues of the day. The book includes a “box” of questions for readers or book clubs to consider as they go through the chapters, as well as an extensive resource list.

Now residing in the greater New Orleans area, Schmitt is a writer, public speaker and presenter, editor, film producer and photographer, as well as the president of Victor’s International Model and Talent Management.

BREES DREAM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NOLA PICKLEBALL FEST
Annual event to be held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to serve as a major fundraiser for the Brees Dream Foundation
Brittany and Drew Brees announced today the creation of The NOLA Pickleball Fest, an annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation. The inaugural event will be held August 10-13, 2023, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Brees and the staff of the Brees Dream Foundation have been working closely with local tourism leaders at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and New Orleans & Company, as well as national companies Joola and The Kitchen, to organize all aspects of the event.
“Brittany and I could not be more excited to bring the first annual NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans,” says Drew Brees. Combining one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable sports alongside a city that knows how to host a party will make this one of the premier events of the summer. It will be great food, music, events, and plenty of pickleball all inside the Convention Center, as we crown amateur champions and raise proceeds for the Brees Dream Foundation that will go towards our ongoing efforts in New Orleans.”
The NOLA Pickleball Fest (“The NOLA”) benefitting the Brees Dream Foundation is a unique, festival-style pickleball tournament featuring 24 tournament quality PickleRoll courts, live music, a celebrity exhibition match featuring Drew Brees, VIP experiences and much more. The NOLA will have three divisions of round robin play: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles for skill levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0+. There are two brackets to compete in: Open and 40 yrs. old and over. The Perseid Meteor Shower Has Arrived, Here's How to See It
You can expect to see an average of 100 meteors per hour at the impressive shower's peak.
By Serena Tara
Kevin Key/Slworking/Moment/Getty Images
Close your eyes and get ready to make a lot of wishes—or actually, you'd better keep your eyes open for this one!
The beloved Perseid meteor shower is upon us, and like every year, it is active from mid-July to late August. However, as In The Sky points out, this year it won't peak until the days around August 13.
That said, it's supposed to be a great year for Perseids, which are generally thought to be one of the most impressive meteor showers most years, even if last year's show was a bit of a bust due to a full moon. According to Space.com, the moon is set to be only 10% illuminated during those days, making it ideal conditions to better see the meteors. Don't worry about missing out—they're supposed to be many. The Perseids flaunt a very high rate of meteors per hour, and they can reach a rate of between 150-200. On average, according to NASA, you can catch around 100 per hour.
Now, onto the important stuff. Where and when should you locate yourself to better see them? The answer is the Northern Hemisphere, to start. In terms of an actual spot, you should aim to find the darkest possible location, so it is advisable to do some research and find the nearest Dark Site or a place with very low light pollution. You might want to go to sleep early before your stargazing endeavor, though—the best time to catch them is the pre-dawn hours.
Once you've done that, you're pretty much set—you won't need any equipment or binoculars, but you should allow your eyes to adapt to the dark. In order to do that, lay down and look at the sky towards the north for a good 30 minutes, after which you can expect to start seeing some gorgeous shooting stars. Additionally, NASA recommends getting comfortable—bring a blanket or a sleeping bag, and plan to lie flat on your back. Happy stargazing!

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
