NATIONAL PICKLEBALL DAY
Today is August 8 and National Pickleball Day on the National Day Calendar to celebrate a popular paddle sport that continues to gain popularity. In the spirit of this new sport, we are sharing our curiosity and support for a game that is enjoyed by people of all ages.
Pickle ball is a paddle sport that combines tennis, badminton, and table tennis in one. If you have never played or witnessed a game of Pickleball, think Wiffle ball meets Ping Pong meets Tennis. But don’t let that description confuse you. The ball used is similar to a Wiffle ball, while the racket used is similar to a short tennis racket only solid like a ping pong paddle rather than webbed. Play happens on a court similar to that of a tennis court.
In celebration of National Pickleball Day, we wanted to highlight some fantastic gear to elevate your game. The National Day Calendar team has recently encountered an impressive line of clothing from Fyrfyte ( pr. firefight). Their collection boasts high-quality materials and designs and provides comfort and style both on and off the court. Whether you’re an avid pickleball player or just getting started, wearing the right attire can significantly improve your performance and enjoyment of the game. Check out Fyrfyte‘s selection to find the perfect fit for your next match.
Even though the game combines three separate games, it is fairly easy to play. Two players each have a paddle, a plastic ball with holes, and a solid surface with a net. Players of the game serve the ball back and forth, similar to a game of tennis. Players also determine points similar to those found in tennis.
Pickleball Beginnings
Pickleball has been around since 1965 and originates on Brainbridge Island, Washington. Friends Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum were thinking of a way to keep their families entertained in the summer. After combining elements of badminton and table tennis, the trio created some equipment and made up a few rules. Interestingly, the hardest thing about the game was finding a name for it. Legend says Joel’s dog Pickles made a habit of chasing after the balls and hiding them. One thing led to another and the game became known as Pickleball. We’re not sure how true this is, but it’s a cute story to share.
The Origins of Pickleball: How It Began
5 Fun Pickleball Facts
- Pickleball players and fans are called “Picklers.”
- Losers in Pickleball are known as being “Pickled.”
- Some people eat mustard before playing Pickleball to avoid getting leg cramps.
- The non-volley zone in front of the Pickleball net is call the “Kitchen.”
- A “dink shot” is the result of the ball landing in the Kitchen.
Many people refer to Pickleball as a sport, even though it is low-impact, allowing people of all ages to play. The easiness of the game also allows retirement communities to offer it as an activity for seniors. Despite the sport being low impact, you can burn over 250 calories and take up to 7,000 steps during a 30 minute game.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Poche Family Farm
Poche Family Farm is located in Independence, Louisiana, a fitting name as the family is the sole labor force on the farm. Charise (who you’ll see weekly at market), Albert, and their children Billie and Camille use sustainable agriculture techniques like utilizing natural fertilizers, organic pesticides, cover crops for soil maintenance, and unheated structures for weather resistance called high tunnels. The farm was started with the intent to grow nourishing food to feed their family, and now that dedication is carried through in all their crops as they’ve expanded the business to feed many families through our markets. Their selection varies with the season. Right now, you can find them at the Tuesday Uptown Market. Stop by the stand for produce, including tomatoes, peppers, squash, okra, and herbs like basil. Plus, you can find value-added products like freeze-dried turmeric, pepper jam, and honey.

Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin has unveiled the commissioned design for the 2023 “I Voted” sticker that features art by Jefferson Parish artist Becky Fos.
The unveiling ceremony took place at the Louisiana State Archives.
The artwork for this year’s sticker is titled “Confidence.”
“We are extremely grateful to Ms. Fos for creating another beautiful, original work of art to grace Louisiana’s ‘I Voted’ stickers for the second year in a row,” Ardoin said in a news release. “Her expressive use of color provides a creative twist on iconic Louisiana imagery.”
Voters will receive the stickers when they vote at the polls for the October 14 Gubernatorial Primary Election, as well as the November 18 Gubernatorial General Election.
“Through her art, (Fos) celebrates New Orleans and the wildlife that inhabits the nearby swamps and bayous,” her website biography reads. “She uses her palatte knife to depict New Orleans’ street musicians, historical figures, prominent architecture, and the beauty that envelops her. Her canvases depict radiant, deep-hued oysters in a rainbow of colors too beautiful to eat, and her pelicans and alligators are adorned with crowns, celebrating their iconic status. These hallmarks capture the imaginations of collectors around the world.”

She has been celebrated both statewide and nationally for good reason. Congratulations to Alison on this well-deserved honor.”
Pelegrin, a Covington resident, is Writer-in-Residence at Southeastern Louisiana University, where she also taught for 20 years, and the author of multiple award-winning collections of poetry.

Concerned about coyotes in your neighborhood?
Jefferson Parish and Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries will host two educational sessions next week to inform residents about current coyote mitigation measures and ways people can discourage coyotes from wreaking havoc in neighborhoods.
The sessions will take place Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Jefferson Parish General Government Building at 200 Derbigny St., in Gretna and on Wednesday, Aug. 9, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Joseph S. Yenni Building at 1221 Elmwood Park Blvd. in Harahan.
In recent months, some residents have complained about increased coyote sightings, and in some cases, pets they believe have been killed by coyotes.
Last week, Jefferson Parish Council members allocated $30,000 in discretionary funds to hire a trapper.
Coyotes are becoming more common in urban areas because of increased development and availability of food, according to the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries.
Coyotes will eat food left outside, including in garbage cans, and hide under decks or sheds and in thick brush and hollow trees. It is recommended that residents feed and keep pets inside, secure garbage cans closed or store them in a garage and collect fallen fruit from trees so as not to attract coyotes.
They can also practice hazing, a technique that scares coyotes and discourages them from returning to a certain area. More details on hazing can be found in the Humane Society of the United States' Coyote Hazing Guide, which is available at www.humanesociety.org/resources/coyote-hazing.

The Exchange Pickleball + Bar to Celebrate Aug. 8 Grand Opening
Rich Collins
The Exchange Pickleball + Bar hosted a soft opening Aug. 5-6 and will officially open to the public on Tuesday, Aug. 8, which just happens to be National Pickleball Day. There will be a celebration from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. that day featuring live music, food and champagne.
The 26,000-square-foot facility has six indoor courts and one outdoor court plus food and drinks. It’s located in a refurbished building at 2120 Rousseau Street in the Lower Garden District near the Uptown Walmart.
Founder Renée Melchiode, a special counsel at Melchiode Marks King LLC, purchased the former warehouse in 2021 to create a facility dedicated to a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.
Redevelopment of the 70-year-old space began in December 2022. Melchiode said new construction costs topped $3 million with significant additional expenses for “development costs, storm water management, rezoning, etc.”
VergesRome led the design. Jos. R. Labadot Inc. is the contractor.
Melchiode says the Exchange will be home to pickleball leagues, clinics and lessons — along with the occasional live music. She said the space will also serve as an event venue for conventions, corporate events and tourists. It will accommodate up to 500 people.
“We had Saints players and coaches visit our site this weekend, and we had guests from all over the region,” she said. “We have repurposed a 70-year-old property, revitalized a neighborhood and created 30 jobs, not to mention more than 250 construction jobs. This is a facility for families, locals, tourists and conventioneers. If our project is successful, it is a testament to our city being able to build other similar eater-entertainment venues.”
The Exchange’s head of pickleball operations is Scott Robinson, a certified instructor. He has 25 years of experience teaching tennis. The facility’s general manager is Phil Papillion, who has multiple years of food and beverage experience throughout Louisiana.
One-on-one pickleball lessons, clinics, open play, and social and corporate events will also be available.

NATIONAL FROZEN CUSTARD DAY | AUGUST 8
When it comes to scooping up a delicious celebration, National Frozen Custard Day on August 8th knows how to do it right. With a smooth texture and fresh flavor, frozen custard delights in many ways.
Similar to ice cream, frozen custard is made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. The dessert comes in several flavors, too. Franchises and custard shops all across the country cater to perfecting this creamy dessert and all its delicious options. Mixing it up with toppings such as syrups, nuts and fruits, custard is another satisfying version of ice cream.
In fact, ice cream vendors, Archie and Elton Kohr invented frozen custard on Coney Island, New York in 1919. They found that adding egg yolks to ice cream created a smoother texture and helped the ice cream stay cold longer. On their first weekend, the Kohr brothers sold 18,640 cones on the boardwalk.
More Frozen Custard Facts
- Its popularity grew in 1933 when frozen custard found a market at the World’s Fair in Chicago.
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin became known as the unofficial frozen custard capital of the world.
- The United States Food and Drug Administration requires frozen custard products to contain at least 10 percent milkfat and 1.4 percent egg yolk solids.
- Because of the egg yolk, frozen custard must be carefully prepared.
- Frozen custard is commonly prepared fresh at the place of sale.

Blakeview: The riverfront streetcar line opened 35 years ago this month
A riverfront streetcar passes down the tracks along the Mississippi.
- Photo by David Grunfeld / The Times-Picayune
This month marks the 35th anniversary of New Orleans’ riverfront streetcar line. When the riverfront streetcars made their inaugural run on Aug. 14, 1988, it marked the first new streetcar line in New Orleans since 1926.
The riverfront line’s nearly two-mile route stretches along the edge of the French Quarter and Central Business District. It was financed with $5.2 million in federal, city and private money.
Initially the line had four streetcars, painted red like the streetcars on the old French Market line, which followed the same route until 1925. The new streetcars were dubbed the “ladies in red” by the Regional Transit Authority. The agency unveiled them just a week before thousands of people arrived in the city for the 1988 Republican National Convention.
According to news coverage at the time, the four original riverfront streetcars were vintage. They included two cars that ran on the Canal Street line before it was discontinued in 1964. They were built in 1923-24 by the Perley A. Thomas Car Co., which also manufactured the iconic St. Charles Avenue streetcars. The other two original riverfront cars were made in Melbourne, Australia in 1924-25.
The riverfront line led the way for several other new streetcar lines in the decades that followed. The Canal Street line returned in 2004, followed by a Loyola Avenue line in 2013 and the Rampart/St. Claude line in 2016. That last one has been out of service since 2019 due to damage from the Hard Rock Hotel construction collapse.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

BREES DREAM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NOLA PICKLEBALL FEST
Annual event to be held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to serve as a major fundraiser for the Brees Dream Foundation
Brittany and Drew Brees announced today the creation of The NOLA Pickleball Fest, an annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation. The inaugural event will be held August 10-13, 2023, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Brees and the staff of the Brees Dream Foundation have been working closely with local tourism leaders at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and New Orleans & Company, as well as national companies Joola and The Kitchen, to organize all aspects of the event.
“Brittany and I could not be more excited to bring the first annual NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans,” says Drew Brees. Combining one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable sports alongside a city that knows how to host a party will make this one of the premier events of the summer. It will be great food, music, events, and plenty of pickleball all inside the Convention Center, as we crown amateur champions and raise proceeds for the Brees Dream Foundation that will go towards our ongoing efforts in New Orleans.”
The NOLA Pickleball Fest (“The NOLA”) benefitting the Brees Dream Foundation is a unique, festival-style pickleball tournament featuring 24 tournament quality PickleRoll courts, live music, a celebrity exhibition match featuring Drew Brees, VIP experiences and much more. The NOLA will have three divisions of round robin play: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles for skill levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0+. There are two brackets to compete in: Open and 40 yrs. old and over. Featured matches will be played on a center court with grandstand seating as well as Kern Studio Mardi Gras floats for VIP viewing. Join us for an unforgettable experience and the ultimate pickleball party. To sign up or for more information, visit www.drewbrees.com.
“As pickleball participation continues to skyrocket, we’re honored and excited to be working with Drew and his team to create an annual pickleball festival that creates tourism for a higher purpose,” said Jay Cicero, President/CEO of the Sports Foundation. “The Brees Dream Foundation will distribute funds raised from the event to partner charitable organizations along the Gulf Coast. Given the combination of the sport’s popularity and charitable aspect of NOLA Pickleball Fest, it will surely be a hit among amateur and seasoned Pickleball players alike.”
“When it comes to sports, New Orleans is known for hosting iconic championship moments. With our singular, authentic culture and welcoming people, 26,0000 hotel rooms within two miles of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and unmatched hospitality, New Orleans is truly Built to Host,” said Walter J. Leger III, President & CEO of New Orleans & Company, the official destination sales, and marketing organization for the New Orleans tourism industry. “Crowds have always been drawn to New Orleans for sporting events of all types and sizes and now it is an honor to add the annual NOLA Pickleball Fest. This event will not only provide a critical summertime tourism boost for the New Orleans economy, but also help the entire community served by the Brees Dream Foundation.”
“The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is delighted to welcome the inaugural NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans this August,” said Convention Center President Michael J. Sawaya. “Our involvement with NOLA Pickleball supports our mission to host events that positively impact the local economy. With the passion of the Brees Dream Foundation and the diligent support of local tourism leaders, there is no doubt the tournament will grow into the best tournament in the nation and benefit our community for years to come.”
Pickleball originated in the Pacific Northwest in the 1960s and combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is the fastest-growing sport in the United States with annual increases of millions of people playing, according to a 2023 participation report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals.
Registration for the tournament opens in early June. To register to play, visit www.drewbrees.com. To volunteer, visit www.gnosports.com/volunteer.

Friday Night Wine School - Wines of Lebanon with James Moises
Friday, August 11, 2023, Sold Out
There is a reason that the Roman Temple of Bacchus is in Lebanon - considered one of the earliest wine-producing areas of the world, the Lebanese, at that time the Phoenicians, have been making wine in the region since 5000 BC. They enjoyed a very vibrant and productive wine culture that fueled the local economy through travel and trade until Ottoman rule began in 1516. Under Sharia law, wine consumption and production were forbidden and the once prolific region became a wine desert for some 350 years. In 1857 a group of Jesuit priests living in the area asked to plant vines to make wine for ceremonial purposes. Their plantings of Cinsault marked the beginning of wine production in its best terroir, the Bekaa Valley. Third-generation Lebanese American, Oregon winemaker, international wine importer and local physician, James Moises represents the largest selection of Lebanese wines in Louisiana and maybe in the US! He just received a whole boatload of Lebanese wine (literally!) last week and he's anxious to share them with us as we discuss the main wine regions, terroir and production methods. We hope you'll join us! Get your tickets here: Lebanon
Friday Night Wine School - Oceans to Mountains, Historical & Geographical Influences in Chile & Argentina
Friday, August 18, 2023, 10 Spots Remaining
While the wine regions of Chile and Argentina share a 3000+ mile border, they couldn't be more different in terms of climate, altitude, soil, grape varieties and overall grape-growing conditions. The Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean have a profound impact on the terroir of their wine regions, as Argentina greatly benefits from the barrier that the Andes provide, while Chile, on the other side of the mountain, benefits from its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. But it's not just geography that has shaped these 2 prolific wine regions. Settled by different peoples at different times, history has played a significant role in forming wine production in Argentina and Chile. The wine industries in both countries have deep-rooted historical backgrounds that have influenced grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and the overall wine culture. Join us tonight as we taste wines from both countries and discuss how history and geography have shaped these prolific wine regions. Get your tickets here Oceans and Mountains

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

The preseason question every year: Exactly how many New Orleans Saints starters will take the field?
Based on what Dennis Allen said Monday, the answer is a majority of them, including new quarterback Derek Carr. The Saints host the Chiefs at noon Sunday at the Caesars Superdome.
“I’m planning on playing starting players in the first preseason game and then we’ll get to where we’re at in the second and the third,” Allen said.

The Perseid Meteor Shower Has Arrived, Here's How to See It
You can expect to see an average of 100 meteors per hour at the impressive shower's peak.
By Serena Tara
Kevin Key/Slworking/Moment/Getty Images
Close your eyes and get ready to make a lot of wishes—or actually, you'd better keep your eyes open for this one!
The beloved Perseid meteor shower is upon us, and like every year, it is active from mid-July to late August. However, as In The Sky points out, this year it won't peak until the days around August 13.
That said, it's supposed to be a great year for Perseids, which are generally thought to be one of the most impressive meteor showers most years, even if last year's show was a bit of a bust due to a full moon. According to Space.com, the moon is set to be only 10% illuminated during those days, making it ideal conditions to better see the meteors. Don't worry about missing out—they're supposed to be many. The Perseids flaunt a very high rate of meteors per hour, and they can reach a rate of between 150-200. On average, according to NASA, you can catch around 100 per hour.
Now, onto the important stuff. Where and when should you locate yourself to better see them? The answer is the Northern Hemisphere, to start. In terms of an actual spot, you should aim to find the darkest possible location, so it is advisable to do some research and find the nearest Dark Site or a place with very low light pollution. You might want to go to sleep early before your stargazing endeavor, though—the best time to catch them is the pre-dawn hours.
Once you've done that, you're pretty much set—you won't need any equipment or binoculars, but you should allow your eyes to adapt to the dark. In order to do that, lay down and look at the sky towards the north for a good 30 minutes, after which you can expect to start seeing some gorgeous shooting stars. Additionally, NASA recommends getting comfortable—bring a blanket or a sleeping bag, and plan to lie flat on your back. Happy stargazing!

Monday, August 21, 7 pm - Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, and the English Sonnet Tradition
This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti and their contributions to the English sonnet tradition. Attendees will explore how Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and Rossetti's Monna Innominata are groundbreaking sonnet sequences which offer women's voices responding to and reimagining the sonnet traditions named for Petrarch and Shakespeare.
Dr. Cognevich has a master's in English literature from the University of New Orleans and a doctoral degree in English literature from Louisiana State University. She taught English literature and writing for more than a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian poetry. THE WINE: We’ll have two wine aficionados with us to showcase Marchesi Antinori and Prunotto Italian Wines — Mallory Young of Southern Glazer’s Signature Fine Wines & Spirits (the world’s preeminent distributor of wine and spirits) and Ashleigh Hammel, the Brand Development Manager for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates for Southern Glazer’s. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates has a partnership with Marchesi Antinori and Prunotto wineries.
- Marchesi Antinori — The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild. All throughout its history, twenty-six generations long, the Antinori family has managed the business directly making innovative and sometimes bold decisions while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment.
- Antinori also owns Prunotto — The winemaker’s vineyards extend over approximately 161 acres in the territories of The Langhe and Monferrato. Prunottos’ rich heritage and unique attributes are revealed in each bottle of wine, capturing the thousands of different expressions that each vineyard parcel is able to reflect. It’s a continuous challenge between tradition and innovation.
THE FOOD: European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer will prepare a four course gourmet Italian meal, complimented by the carefully chosen Italian wines. Chef Pfeifer is the current Owner of Middendorf’s and the former owner of Bella Luna, a fine dining restaurant in the French Quarter. Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
