A SERVANT’S HEART

There are no “big shots” in the kingdom of God. By this, I mean, that there are no people that are greater than anyone else. Jesus’ disciples James and John asked to sit on each side of Jesus in his kingdom. They thought they deserved that position. What was Jesus’ response to this? He washed the feet of the disciples and said in John 13:16: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

Jesus, God in the flesh, showed us the example to live by. We are to be servants, not be served. In Colossians 3:22-23 it says, “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”

Whatever task is before us, we should do it as if we are doing it to the Lord. Even if you are called to wash someone’s feet, do it as if you are doing it to Jesus. Every task, every word, every thought that we have, we should ask ourselves this before we do them: “Would I do this to Jesus?” If you cannot honestly say that, then your motives are wrong.

A servant’s heart does not look out just for themselves. He always does what he does as if he is doing it to the Lord.

Paul speaks of this in Philippians 2:6-7 as he spoke of Jesus, “6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” 

Jesus is our example of a person with a servant’s heart. He laid down his life for others. He loved others even when they despised him. He forgave when he was crucified. We must try to be like Him, desiring to have a servant’s heart also.

BLOOD GUILTINESS

In the 9^th chapter of Genesis, we see Noah talking with God after the flood. In verse 6 it says, “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed…” This is a principle that started long before Noah.

Earlier, before the flood, In Genesis 4 we saw a murder take place. Cain despised his brother Abel and killed him when God rejected Cain’s offering. Abel’s blood cried out to God [vs. 10] from the ground where it had spilled. 

He had shed innocent blood, and now had the sin of blood guiltiness. Someone’s blood would have to be shed for that crime. Cain was marked for eternity for this crime, and this mark would spare his life if someone tried to kill him. 

Then there is the matter of our sin. Hebrews 9:22 says, “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission [putting away of sin].” Someone’s blood, either our own blood or someone else’s blood must be shed for our sin. We are blood guilty.

It is difficult to imagine just how difficult it was for a purely righteous and Holy Father to watch His pure and sinless Son to bear all mankind’s sin upon Himself. Jesus had done nothing wrong, yet he would pay the debt for all mankind’s sin by shedding his pure sinless blood for mankind’s guilty blood. Jesus did not deserve this, yet he chose to die this miserable and agonizing death because of my sin and your sin. We are blood guilty.  is His

This was an extremely difficult thing for Jesus to do, and he asked the Father to remove the “cup” of suffering to spare him this burden if there was any other way to pay the debt. Nevertheless, he said, “Not my will, but thine [the Father’s] be done.”

Jesus voluntarily paid with his blood as a sacrifice for us. He blood was applied to the altar in heaven for our sin. He bore our blood guiltiness in His own body, so that by faith we do not have to bear it. We can now enter heaven guilt free. 

What amazing love! He took my blood guiltiness on that cross.
