NATIONAL POINSETTIA DAY
Each year on the 12th of December, people across the United States celebrate one of the most recognizable plants of the holidays on National Poinsettia Day.
In 16th-century Mexico, the connection between the poinsettia plant and the Christmas season begins. According to legend, a girl wanted desperately to celebrate Jesus's birthday. Worried, the girl feared she would have no gift to offer because she was so poor. An angel tells her to give any gift with love. After gathering weeds from alongside the road, the young girl placed them in the manger. Miraculously the weeds bloomed into beautiful red stars.
The poinsettia initially came to the United States with Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist and the first U.S. Minister to Mexico. In 1825, he sent cuttings home to Charleston, South Carolina.
However, it wasn't until the early 1920s that the poinsettia started taking root in American culture. Paul Ecke, a second-generation farmer in California, discovered a grafting technique that caused the seedlings to branch. Hawking their Christmas flower at roadside stands, Paul Ecke Jr. later advanced sales of the poinsettia through shipping and marketing.

NOPD, NHTSA Remind Drivers: ‘Tis the Season to Drive Sober… or Get Pulled Over
NEW ORLEANS – It’s hard to have a happy holiday when you’re arrested for drunk driving. Keep the season merry and bright by following the law and refusing to drink and drive.
During this busy winter holiday season, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is teaming up the NOPD to urge drivers to think twice before drinking and driving. NHTSA and the NOPD want all drivers to remember this lifesaving message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Drivers will see officers working on a special high-visibility enforcement campaign to spread the message about the dangers of drunk driving from December 15, 2023, through January 1, 2024.
Tragically, December can be a dangerous time for people on the roads. During the 2017-2021 December months, there were more than 4,500 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. In December 2021 alone, 1,013 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. Male drivers are far more likely to be impacted by drunk driving: In December 2021, drunk male drivers were involved in fatal crashes at a much higher rate (721) compared to female drivers (208), male drivers were almost four times more likely (721) to be alcohol-impaired and involved in a fatal traffic crash than females (208) in December 2021. More parties and festivities celebrating the season brings out more drunk drivers. NHTSA and the NOPD urge drivers to always make a plan before heading out to a celebration.
“Drunk driving isn’t just dangerous, it’s illegal,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. “Drivers have a choice to make: Follow the law and respect their fellow drivers by refraining from drunk driving. Or, make the choice to drive drunk, put others at risk, and risk your own mortality and wellbeing. We need a commitment from every driver to keep the roads free of drunk drivers so that everyone can have a safe holiday.”
According to NHTSA, 13,384 fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2021 involved alcohol-impaired drivers. This represented 31% of all traffic fatalities in the United States for the year, and a 14.2% increase from 2020. In December 2021 alone, 1,013 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.
The NOPD and NHTSA are reminding citizens of the many resources available to get them home safely. “Drunk driving is not acceptable behavior,” Kirkpatrick said. “It is essential to plan a sober ride home before you ever leave for the party. There are too many resources to get home safely. There are just no excuses for drunk driving.”
There are plenty of options to help impaired drivers get home safely, such as designating a sober driver or calling a taxi or rideshare. If you see a drunk driver on the road, do not hesitate to contact the NOPD
Remember: a few dollars spent on a ride is a lot cheaper than a DUI, which can cost up to $10,000. Something else to consider: Don’t ever be too proud or embarrassed to ask for a ride. Allowing a sober driver to help you get home safely keeps you and others safe. What’s more embarrassing than drunkenly asking for a sober ride home? Spending the night in jail. Having your car impounded. Losing your job or your security clearance. Take your pick.
No one should mix drinking and driving, and no one is immune to the effects of drunk driving. If you find yourself drunk and stranded with your vehicle, give your keys to a sober driver who can safely drive you home. Remind your friends to never get in the vehicle with a drunk driver. If you have a friend who is about to drive drunk, take away their keys and help them get home safely. Don’t worry about offending someone — they’ll thank you later. Always have a plan before you head out for the evening. If you wait until after you’ve been drinking to figure out how to get from one place to the next, you will already be too impaired to make the right choices.

What does "parallax" mean?
Changes based on view position
parallax pronunciation: /ˈpærəlæks/
Definition: the apparent shift or displacement of an object when viewed from different positions. It is caused by the change in the observer's line of sight or perspective.
Origin: The word "parallax" originates from the Greek word "parallaxis," meaning "alteration." It was first used in astronomy to describe the apparent displacement of a celestial object due to the observer's movement.
Example: When you look at an object with one eye closed and then switch to the other eye, you may notice a slight parallax as the object appears to change position.
"Changes based on view position" is another way to describe the concept of parallax. It refers to the change in position or displacement of an object when observed from different viewpoints. This phenomenon is commonly observed in everyday life, such as when we move our eyes or change our position, causing objects to appear to shift relative to their background. The concept of parallax is essential in understanding depth perception, motion parallax, and the measurement of distances in various fields, including astronomy, photography, and navigation.

Sports are an integral part of human history. From the earliest civilizations to modern times, sports have always been a way to bring people together and showcase human excellence. Over the years, athletes have broken numerous records, pushing the limits of human endurance and skill. In this blog post, we will take a look at some of the most impressive records in sports history.
The Great Bambino
Babe Ruth, also known as the Great Bambino, is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He set numerous records during his career, and some of them still stand today. One of his most impressive records is his career home run record. He hit 714 home runs during his career, a record that stood for almost 40 years until Hank Aaron broke it in 1974. Ruth was not just a home run hitter, he was a complete player, as evidenced by his career batting average of .342 and his 2,213 career runs batted in.
The Flying Finn
Paavo Nurmi, also known as the Flying Finn, was a long-distance runner from Finland. He set numerous world records during his career, but perhaps his most impressive feat was winning nine gold medals in the Olympic Games. Nurmi won three gold medals in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, five gold medals in the 1924 Paris Olympics, and one gold medal in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. His record of nine gold medals in the Olympic Games stood for 56 years until it was broken by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina in 1964.
The King of Clay
Rafael Nadal is widely regarded as the greatest clay court tennis player of all time. He has won a record 13 French Open titles, which is the most by any player in the history of the tournament. Nadal has a career win-loss record of 460-99 on clay courts, which is a winning percentage of 82.3%. His dominance on clay courts is unparalleled, and it is unlikely that anyone will ever be able to match his record.

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.
WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED—the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY
Gingerbread House Day on December 12th recognizes a family tradition for many around the country.
A favorite food of an Armenian monk, Gregory of Nicopolis, brought gingerbread to Europe around 992 AD and taught French Christians to bake it. Since gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies, monks baked to be sturdy to molded into images of saints.
We can thank the Brothers' Grimm for a gingerbread house, though. Through their tale of Hansel and Gretel, they introduce an evil witch who lives in a house made of gingerbread. It didn't take long for the German gingerbread guilds to pick up the idea. Soon, they put gingerbread houses to a more festive use making snowy cottages made from the spicy-sweet treat.
Today, we can spend the day baking, cutting, and building to our heart's delight. Kits take some steps out of the process so we can get right down to constructing our winter wonderlands.

NATIONAL AMBROSIA DAY
Right in the middle of the holiday season, National Ambrosia Day brings a refreshing salad to the celebration table. On December 12th, bring ambrosia to your holiday dinner or celebration and go home with an empty bowl.
Ambrosia, according to Greek mythology, is the nectar of the gods, endowing strength and immortality to those who eat it. The term itself can mean something especially delectable to taste or smell.
The earliest recipes for ambrosia salad appeared around the 1800s. The recipes called for citrus fruit, coconut, and sugar. However, those who find coconut disagreeable leave it out of the recipe. We must note that if you omit coconut, a forceful objection could be heard from a true southerner.
A genuine ambrosia salad is served the same day it is prepared. However, more modern recipes suggest overnight refrigeration of the dish. Other ingredients often added to the salad include pineapple, nuts, cherries, apples, bananas, whipped cream, or yogurt.

The payload orbited the Earth for 22 days sending the message "Hi" by Morse code to approximately 300,000 amateur radio operators tracking OSCAR1.

The Bolt from Jamaica
Usain Bolt is widely regarded as the greatest sprinter of all time. He set numerous world records during his career, but perhaps his most impressive feat was winning three gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4x100 meters relay in three consecutive Olympic Games. Bolt won gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2012 London Olympics, and the 2016 Rio Olympics. He is the only athlete to have won three gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4x100 meters relay in three consecutive Olympic Games.
The Black Mamba
Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He set numerous records during his career, and his most impressive feat was scoring 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. This is the second-highest point total in a single game in NBA history, behind only Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game in 1962. Bryant's 81-point game is a testament to his scoring ability and his determination to win.
The Greatest of All Time
Muhammad Ali is widely regarded as the greatest boxer of all time. He set numerous records during his career, but perhaps his most impressive feat was winning the heavyweight championship of the world three times. Ali won his first heavyweight championship in 1964, his second in 1974, and his third in 1978. He is the only boxer to have won the heavyweight championship of the world three times. Ali's record of three heavyweight championships is a testament to his skill, determination, and perseverance.
Sports records are a testament to human excellence and the limits of human endurance and skill. From Babe Ruth's home run record to Usain Bolt's Olympic gold medals, these records inspire us to push ourselves beyond our limits and strive for greatness. As we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, we will undoubtedly see more impressive records broken in the years to come.

New Orleans Uncovered
Derby Gisclair
1920s: Unloading Coffee
The United States consumes more coffee than any other nation on earth, some 145 billion cups every year. For decades, no, centuries, the port of New Orleans has handled shipments of coffee beans – over 550,000 tons every year, mostly from Brazil and Columbia. The two images below date from the late 1920s showing crews unloading and storing sacks of coffee beans. Since the 1700s, New Orleans has grown to be the largest coffee port in the country. But that wasn’t always so.
When the Civil War interrupted coffee imports, the local s began to experiment with the the blends they roasted, adding chicory root to extend their grounds. While many do not care for the flavor, many embrace it to this day. With the establishment of boutique coffee roasters and purveyors, New Orleans enjoys a robust coffee scene, not to be missed.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks
Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour
New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.
“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”
Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.
Highlights this year include:
2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays
Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included
Multiple dedicated Bike Nights
Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”
Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate
Holiday-themed Storyland
Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship
New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland
“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”
City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112
5PM
During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.
Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.
Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.
“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.
This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.
The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.
The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."
The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.
“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”
“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”
Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb. Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.
“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."
“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

DELFEAYO MARSALIS
& The Uptown Jazz Orchestra
EVERY WEDNESDAY in DECEMBER!
That's right! After nearly 4 years, Delfeayo and the Big Band return home to Wednesdays at Snug Harbor!
Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).
Early influences on Delfeayo's style include J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists, including Harry Connick Jr, Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and his father and brothers.
In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, thus dubbing them
"America's First Family of Jazz."
On packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: "Whatever you have to do," the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s, the music is just as tight. From Mardi Gras music to modern jazz, this band does it all.
An intimate experience like no other!
Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm.
Doors at 7:00pm & 9:00pm.
Purchase advance tickets now, and then arrive early for dinner, drinks or dessert, to be in that number:

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in a New Adaptation by Patrick Barlow
Join us as we bring to life the classic tale of 'A Christmas Carol' at the Marquette Theatre on the Loyola campus.
About the Event
Celebrate the holiday season with Crescent City Stage in what we hope becomes a new annual tradition.
The Performance
Patrick Barlow, writer of the Broadway and West End hit The 39 Steps, has retold Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. This thrilling adaptation uses only five actors to bring some of Dickens' most beloved characters to life. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig, Barlow's A Christmas Carol uses nothing more than some simple props, fresh physicality, and the power of imagination to convey this timeless story of redemption. Witness Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from a stingy miser to a man who generously celebrates the spirit of the season all year long, in this highly theatrical adaptation.
Join us for A Christmas Carol!

JACKSONVILLE STATE GAMECOCKS AND LOUISIANA RAGIN' CAJUNS ACCEPT INVITATIONS TO 2023 R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns accepted invitations today to compete in the 23rd Annual R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday, December 16 at the Caesars Superdome. The game will kick off at 1:15 p.m. CST and will air on ESPN and ESPN Radio.
“On behalf of the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Committee and staff, it is a pleasure to host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in New Orleans for this year’s game,” said R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Chairman Sheriff Paul Valteau. “We look forward to an exciting game and a week full of celebrations for these outstanding programs.”
Jacksonville State finished its final year of transition to FBS with an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Conference USA play. This will be the Gamecocks’ first bowl appearance in program history.
“We are excited to be headed to New Orleans to represent Jax State in its first ever bowl game,” Head Coach Rich Rodriguez said. “I’m happy for our team, especially our seniors, for earning this opportunity in our first season in FBS. It will be a great week and experience for our players, staff and fans.”
Jacksonville State is one of only eight teams since 1970 to win at least eight games in its first season playing an FBS schedule. The Gamecocks finished third in Conference USA, falling to New Mexico State (10-4, 7-1) and Liberty (13-0, 8-0), who met in the CUSA championship game on Friday.
Under Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, the Gamecocks ranked second in CUSA in rushing, averaging 232.2 yards per game. Redshirt senior running back Malik Jackson ranks second in the league in rushing yards per game, and his 6.4 yards per carry was best in the conference.
Jacksonville State averaged 29.8 points per game, tied for third-best in the conference.
The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns concluded the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and 3-5 in the Sun Belt, making them bowl eligible for the sixth straight year, a record for the program.
“We are excited to make the trip to New Orleans and play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl,” Head Coach Michael Desormeaux said. “The New Orleans Bowl Committee puts on a great event for our student-athletes, and we are looking forward to playing a great opponent in Jacksonville State.”
Louisiana’s rushing attack is also formidable, averaging 182.7 yards per game, second-best in the Sun Belt. The Cajuns’ 32.3 points per game ranks fourth in the league. The Cajuns are outstanding on special teams, with coverage units that lead the SBC in kick return and punt return yardage allowed.
Louisiana will make its record seventh R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl appearance. Its five wins are the most in the game’s history.

Special Story Time at Jefferson Parish Library will introduce animated characters from new Bayou Phoenix entertainment complex
Author Matthew Ghergich will read from his book Dixie the Cajun Fiddle Playing Pixie
METAIRIE – Matthew Ghergich, a New Orleans businessman and children’s book writer, will read from his debut book Dixie the Cajun Fiddle Playing Pixie during a special story time at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 West Napoleon Ave, Metairie) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16. Animated figures from the Louisiana-themed book will be developed as licensed characters at the planned Bayou Phoenix entertainment complex in New Orleans East.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.
Dixie the Cajun Fiddle Playing Pixie is a tale that centers upon a beautiful Cajun fairy princess with luminous, gossamer wings who communicates through her fiddle playing. Dixie’s fiddle not only allows her to charm audience with its magical tones but the stringed instrument is also the source of wondrous powers that enable her to protect and care for the residents of Pixie Parish. Dixie is discovered deep in the Manchac Swamp by Yats and his Famous New Orleans Jazzland Band. She helps the musicians find their way back home after the band members are washed into the wilderness following a hurricane.
Ghergich says his love of Louisiana derives from his family’s long heritage in the state. His grandfather founded the Yellow Cab Company in New Orleans in 1924 on Annunciation Street. The site ultimately became the headquarters for the Grayline Tour Bus company. In addition to serving as branded characters for Bayou Phoenix, Ghergich has plans to develop his children’s books into animated feature films.
Bayou Phoenix took control of the abandoned 227-acre Six Flags site in October 2023 with plans to turn the former theme park into indoor/outdoor water parks, youth sporting facilities, two hotels, an 8.5-acre clear lake for swimming, a movie studio, amphitheater, retail outlets and other amenities. The targeted opening year is 2025.

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES starting this weekend. GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS, the vintage TV series that began WYES’ legacy of award-winning nationally broadcast cooking shows, returns to the station – 40 years after its debut. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.
Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson. LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale
Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!
#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique
https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...
A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.
Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.
What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.
- This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
- The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.
What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
